Chris Matthews: You’re ‘Racist’ If You’re Against Raising the Minimum Wage
NewsBusters.org ^ | December 20, 2013 | Jeffrey Meyer

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews took a break from his nightly “Hardball” tirade to grace the set of Morning Joe to unload on the GOP for opposing extending unemployment benefits and increasing the minimum wage.

Appearing on December 20, the “Hardball” host proclaimed that Republicans “don’t like these bums” and proceeded to call Republicans “these racists” for opposing liberal policies on unemployment benefits and raising the minimum wage

Chris Matthews: You’re ‘Racist’ If You’re Against Raising The Minimum Wage

Matthews began his Friday morning rant by proclaiming:

There's a conflict on the right, hard right, nasty right. If you make fun of people for being unemployed or being underemployed and you get food stamps and stuff like that. Help them make more money. Are you against the working poor, people catching the bus at 6:30 in the morning and work 40-50 hours a week? Are they bad guys or good guys? They’re good guys. Treat them like good guys.

In Matthews’ distorted view of reality, refusing to extend unemployment benefits -- which max out at 99 weeks in many states -- is racist and that you view those individuals as lazy “bums.” Rather than looking at the plethora of data that shows that extending unemployment benefits hinders job creation, Matthews would rather throw extreme statements at Republicans, going so far as to use the typical MSNBC line of calling the GOP racist and bigoted for opposing liberal policies.

Morning Joe

December 20, 2013

7:34 a.m. Eastern

CHRIS MATTHEWS: See there’s a problem here. You can't make enemies of all the working poor and the poor and say we don't like the bums or the ones with fancy fingernails or whatever the hell they’re talking about these days, these racists. Or you’re going to help the people out that are trying to work and you got to take sides with the worker bees. Okay, you may not have a great education but you're going to work every day. And you're showing up. You're doing your job. We’re going to give you a decent wage. That’s a good value for Republicans.

Given its’ history, you’re racist if you SUPPORT minimum wage laws.

It’s pretty straightforward.

Wage controls always artificially disrupt the economy. In this case, wage control in the form of minimum wage forces fewer jobs in the job market.

Basic Economics 101 & 102, which should be a REMEDIAL REQUIREMENT for every politician going to D.C., says that supply and demand are diminished by artificial economic ceilings and floors forced by government fiat. Maximum prices or wages are artificial ceilings. Maximum prices force lower supply of product. Maximum wages force lower demand in the job market.

Minimum prices or minimum wages are artificial floors. Minimum prices force lower demand. Minimum wage lowers supply in the job market because it forces higher costs in wages forcing companies to cut back on their work force. If a company keeps the same number of jobs, then to stay in business, because its costs are higher, the company will either have to 1) raise prices which will lower demand eventually causing layoffs or 2) cut back hours and, therefore, reduce production supply. (The domino effect from there is less supply or higher prices, which, in turn forces less demand, and the downward spiral is on for that company, product, or sector.) So the company will most likely reduce its work force resulting in fewer jobs for entry level workers and possibly in the long term the same domino affects mentioned above.

The lesson is that voluntary cooperation of supply and demand in the free market in jobs and products accurately determines wages and prices.

These things are borne out not only in basic economic theory but in historical fact. It is not rocket science. However, Socialism opposes basic and sound economic theory which is why Socialism sits on the ash heap of historical disaster only to be brought back out and tried again by do-gooders who don't know better and power-lusting demagogues. And although government economic meddling solely cause these economic destabilizers and shortages, the government-media propaganda machine will spew out reams and volumes arguing for more government as the solution because "the free market is too unstable".

Racist here!

Actually somebody needs to do a “You might be a racist if ...” riff along the Jeff Foxworthy lines. That’s how much of a joke that word has become.

Even though they know the minimum wage is bad economics, the Republicans will cave again. It's part of their DNA.

They don’t have an argument, they just have to throw names around.

why doesn’t Matthews cut his pay dramatically and give it to the janitors at MSNBC? They work harder than he does...

Cannot disagree with a word of what you say. Whenever a politician spouts the nonsense that increased minimum wages (or unemployment insurance) leads to economic growth, I automatically assume that he (she) is an economic moron.

I think the sting of being called racist has exceeded its useful life. I’m against the government setting ANY wage. There, I’m a racist, so what?

The truth is 'you're a racist, if you support raising the minimum wage. The effect of a high minimum wage to to elimate the jobs of black teenagers, those with the least experience and lowest skills. Those who need that first step on the wrung more than anyone.

The whites in South Africa enacted very high minimum wages during apartheid. Why? Did they want to help blacks? No. They made it less expense, ie easier to discriminate against blacks. The southern Democrats in the US, enacted the Davis-Bacon Act to require governments to pay "prevailing wages", ie pay a higher minimum wage. Why would southern Democrat segragationists want a higher minimum wage? To help blacks, because they weren't racist? I don't think so.

During the Great Depression, when this law was passed, black construction crews traveled the country and underbid the white construction companies. Raise the minumum wage to eliminate the competition. Thank you Democrats.

And the Democrats are still up to their racist ways, thank you Chrissie "tingles" Matthews.
