"American Hustle" filmmaker David O. Russell said the bribe-taking politicians in his film based very loosely on the 1978 Abscam operation are "small potatoes" in the context of today's political climate, where recent campaign finance laws have made money's influence in politics far more opaque.
In a Q&A with Chris Matthews after a Washington, D.C. screening of the film Tuesday, Russell explained, "$75,000 in a briefcase is very innocent by today's standards, where the Supreme Court has made legal hundreds of millions and billions of dollars I don't even know where they come from or where they go or what people are getting for that. It's beyond all of us."
"The Koch brothers...that's the idea they fight any time there's a transparency law," Matthews added, to which Russell replied, "So these guys are small potatoes to that."

Another Hollywood type opening their mouth and driving away part of their audience.
The Koch Bros. are well aware they are a target by the Gestapo. I’m sure they are as clean and law abiding that is humanly possible. George Wallace used to send in one dollar more in taxes than was due so the IRS would have to refund it because he knew they were going over his taxes with a fine tooth comb. With that being said, the myriad of laws and regulations make almost any business impossible to be in compliance because of the volume of laws on record.
Forget the Koch Brothers. The DemocRAT Party is the Mother of All Con Men. The Koch brothers can’t hold a candle to the con jobs being pulled off by the “progressive” liberals in the Obama regime.
Did he mention Soros, Peter Lewis, Bill Gates, Zuckerberg or Warren Buffet...or the billionaire Lefty foundations like Pew, Ford, Rockefeller? Didn’t think so.
What about labor unions who use public tax dollars to pad the pockets of Liberal politicians who launder the money back to them and run up huge deficits we all pay for?
Any mention of that? Ollie Stone? Spielberg? Bay?
Really? I wasn't aware of that.
He is right, though. I'd like to see someone attempt a movie about Soros and his alphabet-soup of front organizations. He usually has at least two horses in any race, and dozens of fake activist groups, and firm control of the news coverage. He never gambles; he controls the process like a boat captain.
Its impressive, really. I'd like to see a movie about that.
Somebody needs to explain to this fellow the difference is: $75,000 in a briefcase is still illegal.
An what the Koch brothers may “invest” is peanuts to how much Soros passes out....it’s an inconvenient truth this idiot seems to have left out
Great cast, great reviews. I’m all in.
Strange his name didn't come up in this interview.
Oh, that's right. The lefts motto: "Rules are for thee but not for me."
Headline Is misleading.
It was Matthews who Brought up the Koch brothers.
—”The Koch brothers...that’s the idea they fight any time there’s a transparency law,” Matthews added
I wouldn’t.
It’s bad for the spirit.
It’s just Con(gress)men doing what they do best in the District of Criminals/Con men).
The king and queen of cons.
If anyone is asking Chrissy for his opinion the author must suck beyond belief.
Most people don’t know the empires those two Cons have built while being quote, a “Public Servant”, most of their adult lives.
Am I reading this right? The guy never says a thing about the Koch brothers. Christingle Matthews brings it up.
I forget — which one is “slander” and which one is “libel”?
Written v.s. spoken?
Went to Saving Mr Banks instead.
