Louisiana is famous for celebrating Mardi Gras every spring, but it’s also home to worst drivers in the U.S.

Thanks for residents’ failure to buckle up, driving carelessly and racking up tickets, CarInsuranceComparison.com says drivers in the Pelican State are the worst in the country, coming in the number one- spot for those three offenses.

CarInsuranceComparison.com ranked the 10 worst states for drivers, pulling statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Motorists Association and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The five categories for each state’s score are ranked by fatalities rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, the failure to obey traffic signals and seat belt laws, drunk driving, tickets and careless driving.

1. Louisiana 2. South Carolina 3. Mississippi 4. Texas 5. Alabama 6. Florida 7. Missouri (tie) 7. North Carolina (tie) 9 Montana 10. North Dakota

BTW, was it you who flashed their high beams at me as I went by 37 mph faster than you were traveling? Well let it be known that you got me...demoralized as I am, now I get to make fun of idiots who flash their high beams at competent drivers :-) on an internet forum. I’d go 120 mph if I didn’t have to worry about grandpa’s like you clogging up the road. How long until the “state” takes your license?

Was it you that passed me doing about 30 miles faster than the speed limit on the shoulder of I-65 with the teenager hanging half way out of the back window? I honked my horn and pointed my finger because you were being really unsafe.

That was the day a miracle happened. The car on my left that seemed like it had been there forever, suddenly pulled in front of me and put a globe on his dash. Finally a cop when you need one.

(True story)

Not me, I wouldn’t let my teenagers hang out the window going that fast. Safety you know...

That’s good, I’m glad you practice safety when you’re going that fast.

Correlate the number of illegal aliens and blacks with the states that have the worst driving records. I wonder if that would have an effect upon the data?

Suspicious that the top 5 are southern states. Drivers are far less courteous in the north. The worst, however, is Puerto Rico - when I used to go there semi-regularly in the 80’s there wasn’t a car on the island that wasn’t dented.

I read once that the L.A. freeways carry something like four times the traffic they did 30 years ago, and yet average commute times have stayed the same. Basically, everyone's driving the same speed they always did, just closer together.

Yep. I merged into traffic dowtown one day, matched speeds, everything is flowing, and noticed that everyone was within a foot or so of each other - and we were all going over 80mph. There was NO WAY there would be adequate reaction time in an accident. BUT - whenever I slowed down to put more of a gap betwen myself and the car in front of me, someone would pull into the gap! I'm used to fast driving, but that close together, it felt like an Indy 500 pack. No thanks!

Thank God nothing happened, but MAN I was glad to get outta there!

Oh one more thing - when I looked at the other drivers, half were on their phones!

Have you driven the Eisenhower, heading into Chicago? OMG! Total insanity. Comes close to driving around Boston.

Here in Virginia if you signal your intention to change lanes other drivers will do whatever it takes to cut off the space you are trying to use. Worst type A mentality I have seen around the country.

Exactly the same thing happens in Kansas. That prolly happens in all 57 states.

Red Hampshire drivers have lead feet, but when you see a driver do something exceptionally stupid; just look at the plates...Massghanistan, 9 times out of 10.

In Kansas, you can't go by tags, because I swear, close to half of all Kansas residents tag their vehicles in other states to evade paying the outrageously high personal property tax in Kansas. And just for the record, by far the majority of tags are Texas. Scofflaw bastards.

Rain and snow bother drivers here in No.Va/DC metro area. The adage goes, “they lose 50 IQ points when it rains, and 100 when it snows.”

That’s compounded by the number of immigrants who have never driven before, much less seen snow.

LOL, yes! I got front-sideswiped, slammed on my brakes and - get this - the only thing that happened was that the raised letters and numbers on my license plate got flattened! I mean, how the heck is that possible? Talk about a guardian angel!

And as for Boston... I could barely get into the city AT ALL. It was not a fun trip...

Pittsburgh Amish and my mother-in-law should be included in any worst driver list, though not sure which should be ranked higher....

It was either the Amish who PARKED in the middle of the Fort Pitt Bridge and let the kiddies run around on the highway while Baby-Momma took pictures - or my MIL, who uses the pine trees at the bottom of her driveway as a guardrail.

Nope. The ones who decide to use their signal as they are turning. No warning whatsoever. It is dangerous in heavy traffic.

Half seem to be on drugs, driving 10mph below the limit, sitting for 20-30 seconds after the light changes, etc....They je’s appreciating the weather, the warmth and the scenery.
