When Carlos Marcello ran New Orleans, The French Quarter was one of the safest places to go. Any petty thief, pickpocket or mugger caught practicing his trade there ended up on the bottom of Lake Pontchartrain. I know this may sound crazy but I just wish some business people would start protecting their interests like he did. You come out to the Burbs to carjack, rob and murder people and cause our profits to decrease and we may just have to extract a little justice outside the law. Just my opinion.

It's not always obvious, but in New Jersey they actually do this. Car thefts are down considerably over the last couple of decades because of police tactics that might be considered questionable (at best). The "business people" who put the strongest pressure on government and police departments to do this aren't the owners of shopping malls where crimes like this take place ... they're the insurance companies that pay out millions of dollars in claims for stolen cars.

That still happens in parts of NJ. My brother lives in Hoboken. A few years back, cars began disappearing from the streets in his neighborhood - his car included. This area happens to be home to some families who do well in the refuse and cement industries. One day, the thefts stopped. They found my brother's car in a Newark chop shop. They found the bodies of the perps (2 blacks from Newark) floating in the Passaic River. The idiots picked the wrong neighborhood. Wish that kind of justice was more common.
