Lawyer’s for 16-year-old Ethan Couch were able to pawn off on a doe-eyed court that “affluenza” was to blame for his stealing beer at WalMart, getting wasted and then plowing his out of control Ford F-350 into a group of folks, killing four.
Affluenza? Please.
For those who’re not hip to “affluenza“, allow me to help you add another word to that ever growing list of PC terms spun by blame-shifting therapists in order to explain away criminal behavior by little Ethans who need to go to prison instead of a luxury rehab in Newport Beach:
Affluenza is a portmanteau of “affluence” and “influenza“. It’s the malady of rich kids whose parents never let them suffer the consequences of their bad behavior. In my day we called them spoiled little bastards and the way we’d help them get healed from affluenza is by beating the crap out of them at school when mommy and daddy weren’t around.
According to a defense psychologist, this is what Ethan suffers from and we should feel sorry for this brat. Yep, these wizards postulated that little Ethan was unable to link his criminal/deadly behavior with its being bad due to his parents’ teaching him that wealth buys privilege. Therefore, to impart to him this hard lesson in reality, his parents hired out an expensive law firm that successfully convinced a court that numb-nuts needed rehab versus jail. Wow. Way to go. Lesson learned.
God knows this ain’t the last specious, bullet-dodging word we’re doomed to learn to let evil people off the hook. Mark my word, some redneck is going to die trying to ride one of T.Boone Pickens’ wind turbines after getting all liquored up at Hooters. His trailer trash parents, upon learning it was one of T. Boone’s turbines, smell blood in the water and sue Pickens for not taking into account their sons Dipshitzophrenia that disallows him to time his jump on to the moving blades. That would be the swiftly rotating unsafe blades, mind you.
Hey, losers. Two can play at that game. I say our conservative reps in the House should start getting more vociferous regarding their disdain for BHO and The RINOS. They could blame their new, aggressive outspokenness on a Stercore Tauri Disorder that makes ‘em scream “BS” uncontrollably when those twins trample upon our founding docs.
Silliness aside, we have four dead individuals who lost their life because this punk didn’t have a life; and now walks away unpunished because our land defines deviancy down.
Personally, as you can imagine, I feel no sympathy for Ethan’s made up ailment. No, my empathy begins and ends with the victims and their shattered families who, not only have to live with their loved one’s loss, but they have the additional pain of watching our justice system dole out a comfy sentence to a kid who should swing

if some inner city kid had done it, no one would be mad that a 16 year old wasn’t thrown into prison to be raped because he was hopeless and disadvantaged
so, is everybody really saying we will hold the rich to a higher standard because they are rich? wrong so wrong
obviously the kid needs help. obviously everybody was compensated by the insurance company. obviously the judge can’t make it any better.
but without evidence that it was a known pattern of behavior, it is not punishable by a prison term

who wouldn’t get their kid a lawyer if their kid was in trouble? that is what lawyers are for. anybody who simply throws themselves on the mercy of the court is a flipping idiot. The court can’t seek out and present evidence to itself. a kid has no idea what evidence is and most people don’t either. the facts have to be argued and presented. that is what the court is for. there is no foregone conclusion such as well 4 died in a car wreck plus alcohol involved equals prison time. this is not Saudi Arabia or north Korea.

yes, I am personally familiar with similar situations
it is extremely difficult to try to help someone who is self destructive like this kid
but throwing away the key is not what we as a country are about
he had an accident and alcohol was involved
he did not set out to kill people

This verdict, while farcical, actually isn’t as bad as it looks. The parents think that they were smart in getting some high dollar shrink to find a way to get the criminal charges to teflon off their kid, but the verdict actually identifies the parents as causal factors in the collision. This means that they are also now civilly liable in up to four wrongful death suits as well bodily injury suits from the injuries sustained by the kid’s friends, as well as all the property damage.
They wouldn’t have exposures like that if junior had been convicted of DUI and manslaughter/”involuntary homicide” as the liability would have rested solely on him.
In essence they’ve been cursed by their own hubris.

This case is outrageous but it happens in a lot of cases. No one wants to be responsible for their actions anymore. Way too many people in this country are like kids who get caught doing something bad and want Mommy and Daddy to let them off the hook or cut them a break. Our society has made “personal responsibility” a bad word and we now are reaping what we sowed.
right if someone hurts you by accident, you aye entitled to money damages, that’s it, end of story, now do you get it?
The cure for this particular case of affluenza would appear to be the dreaded ambulance chaser.
In a just world, the 16-year old “kid” would be swinging like a headless piñata under a tall tree, the whole arrangement preferably paid for by his parents.
