Read: Luke 2:25-35
When Matteo Ricci went to China in the 16th century, he took samples of religious art to illustrate the Christian story for people who had never heard it. They readily accepted portraits of Mary holding the baby Jesus, but when he produced paintings of the crucifixion and tried to explain that the God-child had come to be executed, his audience reacted with revulsion and horror. They couldnt worship a crucified God.
As I thumb through my Christmas cards, I realize that we do much the same thing. In our celebrations and observances, we may not think about how the story that began at Bethlehem turned out at Calvary.
In Lukes account of the Christmas story, only one personthe old man Simeonseems to grasp the mysterious nature of what God has set in motion. This Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against, he told Mary, and then he made the prediction that a sword would pierce her own soul (2:34-35).
Simeon knew that though on the surface little had changedHerod still ruled, Roman troops still occupied Israelunderneath, everything had changed. Gods promised redemption had arrived.
The cradle without the cross misses the true meaning of Christs birth.

Back in the days of the ol' USSR a man named Rudolph and his wife travelled to Moscow for the annual communist party meeting. Rudolph and his wife stayed in a high-class, swanky hotel in Moscow the night before the meeting. The hotel may have been a Hilton or a Motel 8. I do not know. Anyway, the morning of the meeting Rudolph's wife woke up, went to the window and said, "Oh look! It is snowing!" Rudolph got out of bed, went to the window and said, "Oh, no, sweetheart. That is not snow. That is rain." His wife then said, "Oh, no, Rudolph, that is snow. Look at the flakes gently floating down to the ground." Rudolph replied, "No, dear. That is not snow! Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear!"
My modesty will not let me take credit for that genius. It was stolen from the ol' Allen Funt "Candid Camera" program in the 60s!

Last night I stopped by Fatima's Canteen and posted a few tunes. Among the selections were these two versions of Van Morrison's 1971 hit. As I was discussing it today, it dawned on me that most people have never heard the Alternate Take 6 from Morrison's Bang Masters album. Technically, it's an out-take, but given the right circumstances, it could have ended up on the radio with the familiar earworm lying on the cutting room floor. It got me to thinking about my collection of demos, out-takes, rarities and various live performances I've never got around to sharing at The Canteen. So this week, that's my theme for as long as it lasts.

The following Monkees session of a Neil Diamond song from 1967 featured musicians from the famous "Wrecking Crew" including Glen Campbell on acoustic guitar, Tommy Tedesco on electric, Leon Russell and Mac Rebennack (aka Dr. John) on keyboards, Joe Osborn on bass and Hal Blain on drums. At the last minute producers Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart called in percussionist Julius Wechter to add the tambourine backbeats to the Jack Nitzsche arrangement. Still not satisfied Boyce and Hart called in everyone hanging out in the studio (including Sonny Bono) to "beef-up" the backbeat with the familiar handclap version that was ultimately released.

Goood Evening, Canteeners, Troops, and All The Ships At Sea!
And it's a Holiday Music Fest in the old Canteen! I remember so well all the tunes and fun from my time downrange, and I'm sure you do!
Okay, so Canteen Deejays, I have A CHALLENGE for you!
To these old retired tin ears, NO SONG shouts out "It's Christmas Morning!" like the one I'm desperately searching for. And I wonder if any of you have ever heard it:
"Joy To the World", performed by the Percy Faith Orchestra.
Good luck, lads and lasses!
Sarge will be in the area all weekend, so Let's Have Fun!

Van Halen's 1995 Balance Tour was dubbed the "Ambulance" Tour by Eddie Van Halen due to his hip injury caused by avascular necrosis, and his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen wearing a neck brace for most of the tour, due to rupturing three vertebrae in his neck. Despite the injuries, the tour was a huge success for both the band and their fans. The band also introduced a new stage element to the act for the tour: the Jumbotron. Initially Alexs idea, this was the bands first time touring with a video production. The Jumbotron was a giant screen, similar to a television set, located above Alex. This was only the second time the setup had been used in arenas. Barbara Streisand was the first to use it in this manner. A six-man video team using four operating cameras and three point-of-view cameras, two of which were located on Als drum kit, filmed the band, the crowd, and projected video clips and images onto the giant screen, including the clever little Pop-ups from the band's "Right Now" MTV music video (i.e. "Right Now you should be paying attention to the lyrics", "Right Now people who can't read are bumming" and "Right Now Eddie has his hands full.").
Canadian Van Halen fans were especially lucky to view a two-night Pay-Per-View event live from Toronto. The excellent recording has never been released in the states, so it's hard not to consider it a rarity for sharing, Right Now.

Jeff Scott Soto's Journey tribute led to him touring with them in 2006 and 2007 after Steve Augeri had to leave the band because of an acute throat infection. Jeff is best known for being the lead singer for the group Talisman from 1990 till the end of Talisman in 2007, the vocalist on Yngwie Malmsteen's first two albums, touring with Trans-Siberian Orchestra as well as an extensive catalog with European guitarist Axel Rudi Pell. He also fronted the bands Humanimal, Eyes, Takara, Human Clay, Kryst The Conqueror, Redlist, The Boogie Knights and Soul Sirkus. He has released numerous solo albums as well as singing for the fictional band Steel Dragon, which featured Zakk Wylde, Jeff Pilson and Jason Bonham for the soundtrack of the movie Rock Star and the soundtrack for the animated Biker Mice from Mars.
