Internet Shames College Girl Who Might Lose Limbs After Passing Out on a Minnesota Porch

Sad news broke earlier this week of a college student in Minnesota who may lose her limbs after spending the night on a porch in sub-zero temperatures. If there's one thing you can count on with a story like this, it's for anonymous Internet commenters to indulge in some nasty victim-shaming.

And while some folks offered support and good wishes, many others just couldn't help but get judgemental — shaming both Lommel and the friends who drove off without checking she'd got inside:

One of the first lessons my (sainted) dad taught me is to NEVER drive off, leaving a passenger at the curb. Wait until they get inside. When they are teen agers, it is also good to train them to flick the porch light as a thank you to their ride once they’ve made it in the door. And we didn’t even live in a cold climate.

Hm, I did a bunch of underage drinking on the sly way back when.

Sometimes things snowball and bad things happen. That’s life.

But bottom line, the friends should have stayed until the door opened. Just common courtesy, drunk or sober it’s what friends & family should do at night.

She broke the law and she suffers from the consequences of her actions. The sadness is for her parents.

Well, the friends aren't "victims," so I'm not sure shaming them is so wrong.

Maybe being reminded of their responsibility, or lack thereof, in their "friend's" misfortune will resuscitate their malformed consciences.

Good reason for not lowering the age for alcohol.

She's 19 and the drinking age is 21.

When I was her age the drinking age was 18, so we were able to have out parties in our dorms/frats/etc. where there were some responsible people around.

She chose the behavior now she doesn’t want the consequences

I don't know anyone who would want to lose their limbs, consequences of immature decision making or otherwise. That said, the lack of empathy displayed about everything, via internet, is a bit disconcerting.

Her being 19 proves my point.

When I was 18 and drank legally were were three less years mature than 21 and we still drank outside because it was much cheaper than a bar, plus we were socializing with those younger which is even worse, and looking back on my experiences I wouldnt want my kids doing the same.

I remember crashing my bike horribly at age 8 and my friends took care of me and made sure I received proper medical attention.

What’s changed?

Dude, I was 16.....

The stories I could tell about my early life - but I’ll keep silent on the issue.

Good thing I joined the Army in 1974. I don’t think I started to settle down until I was 25 or so.

I was 19 and drunk, more than I should have been. I did not suffer the consequences this poor young woman did, but in all fairness, I probably should have. Or something similary. I survived not because I was good, but because I was lucky.

I also had friends who looked out for me, and I for them when I could.

She's young and did something stupid, and her friends let her down by not looking out for her. She's already paying a high price, physically. Stop rubbing her nose in it and humiliating her, she's looking at potential quadriplegia.

You are assuming her friends were sober and clear-thinking.

I agree with you but I also blame her idiot ‘friends’ who dropped her off in the the extreme cold without waiting to see if she made it inside OK

I was also. Trying to get my DH to understand this principle of good manners.

I was also taught being drunk is bad.
