FULL TITLE: 'Oh you're gonna shoot me?' The sarcastic last words of straight-A student shot dead by college cop after being stopped for speeding

A witness says he heard the sarcastic final words of a Texas student moments before he was shot dead by a college police officer.

Robert Cameron Redus, 23, was killed when Corporal Chris Carter, 35, opened fire on him in the early hours of Friday morning a few blocks away from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio where Redus studied, set to graduate in May.

Neighbour Mohammad Haidaras told My San Antonio  that he heard a tense exchange between Redus and Carter sixty seconds before shots rang out.

He told the website: 'I heard (a man) say, 'Oh, you're gonna shoot me?' like sarcastic almost.'

The 22-year-old claims he heard gunshots less than a minute later and jumped into his closet.

Investigators say an altercation began when Carter tried to pull Redus over for speeding and driving erratically.

The student ... had wrestled the officer's baton away from him and was attacking the officer with it.

If that is so then it should be forensically verifiable and that will change things significantly.

Campus cop emptying his gun into an unarmed kid, out of his car, off campus?

I don’t need to reserve judgment to know that’s not right.

"The dash cam on Carter's marked pickup truck had fallen off and officers had made arrangements to have it remounted, according to the university."

Just a coinki dinky I bet...

This statement is not aimed at all policemen (because there ARE many good service personnel), however the POLICE are out of control in America today!

Campus cop stopping off campus? How far is their jurisdiction?

It all depends, here in California I had city cop, pull me over on a freeway in a totally different city and cite me for ,wait for it, following to close and driving to fast in bumper to bumper traffic. I went to a CHP office and complained and the Sargent told me that they all take the same California Peace Officers oath and therefore their jurisdiction was “anywhere” they were while on duty. I don’t know if that applies to campus police in Texas.

And the student was threatened, and got to go to his forever home. Student loans not paid back.

Sounds like an egotistical, trigger-happy cop who can’t hold any job longer than a matter of months.

Yeah, and upthread someone commented that - based on this latest incident - he is sure to be hired by the DHS next.

Campus police in my town have jurisdiction for several blocks surrounding the university.

They don’t have a “jurisdiction”, because they are security guards, not “cops”.

That is just NOT TRUE my friend. Campus police are actually “police”. Here in Texas, many local School Districts have their own “police” force on High School and Middle School campuses; and they are NOT security guards; they are certified law enforcement officers. You do err in your statement.

Yeah, I find it rather telling that they want to surveille the public at all times in all places, but if you get pulled over with a scanner or radar dectector in the car they get quite aggressive about it.

Coinki dink? You beat me, dag nabbit. And I think we both don’t have to imagine very hard to guess why we don’t have pics of officer friendly’s wounds.

Well, if that’s true they are just asking for trouble. I’m certainly not obeying any commands of a campus “police” officer out on the public way. They’d have to shoot me to get me to comply.
