They were never sure. It was in the 80’s and there were apparently several serial killers traveling the roads picking up hitchhikers. Each serial killer had a similar MO so they didn’t know if there was some kind of connection between the killers or if there were copycat killers. The number of similar killings was in the hundreds IIRC, and they were taking place all over the country some around the same time. They tried to make the claim Lucas was responsible for something like 600 killings, but that was reduced way down.

GWB commuted Lucas's death sentence. I wonder if his confessions were just an elaborate attempt at suicide via the correctional system.

The college I teach at promotes women travel alone.

They posted a flyer that says:

“Travel as a single woman? Don’t wait for someone to travel with you—go at it alone here or abroad! Receive practical information on safety and activities to take charge of your life and travel as you wish!”

This poster has a picture of a young, petite woman with a backpack as she traces her route over a map.

Good gawd.

This “Buffy” mind-set is really getting out of hand.

An article from the Morning Advocate in Baton Rouge gives details of her life.
Apparently she had been in LA for a couple of years and had dated someone for a time.

Usually, such tales lead to drugs and/or prostitution, although being “engaged” to a guy 1/3rd older than she was probably wasn’t a good step either.

The odds weren’t good for her. All this killer did was skip her past all the years of pain and suffering and cut straight to the ending.

People doing dumb things in the presence of dangerous critters aren't just an American phenomenon. Unfortunately, people either keep forgetting or never learn that, outside of microbes and insects, man is the most dangerous predator of them all.
