Im not a racist. But I do have a race problem. I finally owned up to it as I was anticipating seeing 12 Years a Slave. In the weeks leading up to its opening in my state of North Carolina, I tried to think of whom among my friends I could see this film with. I have a number of racially and ethnically diverse friends and acquaintances who would love to see it, and yet, I knew I could only see this movie alone or with another dark-skinned person.
This is hard to admit. I will hurt the feelings of people I love. But isnt confession the first step to being reconciled? I have good, healthy friendships with a range of people, but I could not think of one white person where I live with whom I would feel emotionally safe enough to see this particular movie about slavery. I did not want to have to entertain any of the likely responses from anyone who could not see themselves in the skin of the enslaved men and women on the screen. I had no desire to dissect the film politically and theologically, engage in well-meaning social commentary, marvel at the history conveyed through the movie, or grieve over what was done to black people.
I did not want the burden of the social translations that black people so often have to do automatically on so many internal levels while engaging in discourse with whites in this country. There are things we learn to do almost subconsciously in order to keep some whites comfortable enough around our blackness. Things like gauging their actual level of interest or understanding of black culture in order to know how far to take a particular conversation....

There were thousands of slave owners who were black.
Some blacks were slave breeders. They sold their own children.
I bet this movie doesn’t cover that uncomfortable fact.
That’s not what this thread is about. Besides, what should she end a sentence with? Perhaps you ought to pack it in. English grammar rules are screwed up.
In fact, I think current policies under this administration have taken us back decades in relations between the races. It's time EVERYONE was treated equally in this country as our founders intended.
Furthermore (from an earlier post today, so data are unverified):
1. 13th Amendment — Abolished Slavery. 100% Republican Support; 23% Democrat Support.
2. 14th Amendment — Gave Citizenship to Freed Slaves. 94% Republican Support; 0% Democrat Support.
3. 15th Amendment — Right to Vote for All. 100% Republican Support; 0% Democrat Support.
Agree
Don’t forget the Civil Rights Act.
It is very clear how black people feel. Many of them are very angry and hate all white people. No mystery.
Did someone ground all airliners, trains, buses, cars, motorcycles and ships? If not, then they are quite free to leave should they not like the opportunities afforded them in the United States of America. PERIOD.
“Im not a racist.”
“If you like your [insurance] plan, you can keep it.”
I think everyone is pretty aware of the fact that race issues are prevalent with blacks. As I said, they're broken records on the subject. Everything is seen through the prism of race.
I do agree with you that Obama's administration has made things even worse.
this is the best poster i’ve seen on this issue in a long time.
there can be a whole series of these on all sorts of issues, all ending with point 7.
I doubt if she has adult friends of any color who would want to go see any movie with her.
She is emotionally about 11 years old.
Black people seem to honestly believe that white people today have to apologize for slavery 150 years ago.
I care as much about them as they care about my ancient white butt. The difference is that the statistical probability of my group harming a black person approaches zero. On the other hand, I have to keep my head on a swivel in a city. What an annoying gasbag she is.
Probably half the whites in this country are descended from people who arrived after the civil war.
In other words she is an educated black racist idiot.
Yeah well we white folks have feelings too, Do you think any black gives a flying ****?
Oh Man, that frightened me.
As a first generation American from Nigeria she clearly has no ancestral connection to slavery in America. Nigeria being a major slave trading nation back in the day, she may well have connections with slave traders.
I doubt it...I really doubt it.
