A Sun-Times survey of thousands of pages of court records found that since 2006, Cook County judges have handed down hundreds of improper boot camp sentences to violent felons.
Simons case ended in tragedy.
Less than two years after he was sent to the four-month boot camp program, Simons was charged with murdering Kermit Delashment II, a 21-year-old college student with big dreams.
Delashments death was the 500th killing of 2008 in Chicago.
In all, 17 armed robbers got such a break during that period in Cook County.
After their release from the program, 12 of those 17 men were arrested for new crimes.

I’d like to know some more details about the judges that signed off on these improper boot camp assignments.
Is the boot camp a private enterprise? If so, look for payoffs to the Judge.
But.. but... we don’t NEED the death penalty. We should just lock them up for life...
...oh.. whoops..
The next step is to issue them an AR on their way out.
They kill dozens and blame it on the guns.
You mean like in the Philadelphia Kids For Cash scandal?
Corruption in Chicago? About as likely as icy winds off Lake Michigan in January.
I don’t think that IL boot camp is run privately. I think it is run by the IL DOC. (But, then, it IS Illinois, so look for payoffs to someone about everything that goes on there.) Another problem with this, is that some offenders who do legitimately qualify for boot camp, cannot get in or have to wait extended times.
So what's the problem -- just send him back to boot camp and he can serve time simultaneously for the original offense and the murder! [/ liberal mode]
Actually they are -- technically, violent felons ARE people!
Oregon’s convicted felons often don’t do time, at all.
Yep, just like that.
BTW, I see the Judge in this case actually violated State law by sending these guys to boot camp. I’m sure an arrest and indictment is right around the corner. Or not.
To correct my earlier post, this article is about boot camp used exclusively for Cook County, so is NOT the IL DOC boot camp, and is, therefore, much more likely to be lining the pockets of some judges and others.
The slaying took place on Dec. 22, 2008, in the 200 block of West 91st Street and marked the 500th homicide for 2008, according to earlier reports. Two men were shot during a robbery, and one of them, Kermit Delashment, 21, died from his injuries at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Delashment was shot multiple times, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Good observation about payoffs for sending participants!
