This works only with people that walk with their heads down.
Keep your head up and observe whom is approaching you ... if I see two or more melatonin enhanced individuals approaching me ... I'll stop and eyeball them till they pass.
If they challenge me, I'll respond .. "Yeah, I AM watching you to be sure you ain't one o'them negroes that are playing knock out ... you ain't are you?"

Good advice. Continuous scanning of the environment is also helpful. Don't be hesitant to cross the street, either. It's better to run than to die.
