FAIRVIEW, TN (WSMV) - A picturesque part of Middle Tennessee is the scene of a shocking crime. Someone mutilated then killed a beloved horse, and the owner says the animal died in a tremendous amount of pain.
She's also worried whoever did it will do it again.
The McIlvains have lived outside Fairview for 36 years and say the reason they have stayed is the beautiful front yard pasture for their two Paso Fino horses, Bomber and Falderado.
"Paso Finos are a special breed. They are smart and very close to their rider. They take care of their rider and are very affectionate and want a lot of attention and love," said owner Barbara McIlvain.
But while the family was out of town Friday night, someone killed Bomber and even cut off body parts to keep as trophies.

Hope they left some evidence..that ends in a arrest..
Having owned a couple horses, I know how close you can get to them.
The kind of person or persons who would do something like this, is the kind of animal or animals that we don’t want in society.
Good luck in your investigations.
Reminding us that there are evil persons among us. The person that would do this would do anything.
Paso Fino
Thank you; my thoughts exactly! I shudder to think what this person might do to another human being . . . it is nothing short of pure evil.
Wow!
I have a special plan for people who injure or kill defenseless animals and arrest and/or prison is not on my list. However, hammer and nails are somewhere in the top 10.
Please ping on any news.
Terrible crime.
I’ve rode Paso Finos. For me, in terms of riding experince, going from any other horse to a Paso Fino is like going from a VW Beetle to a Cadillac.
There’s sick folks out there.
Sick means an illness beyond your control, to me at least. The animal who did this did it with willful intent and foretought. It deserves the same treatment it dished out to this innocent creature.
Definitely a danger to society.
Need more detail on the precise nature of the cuts.
Animal mutilation by person or persons unknown has become a commonplace throughout the US, particularly in the mountain states, and the MO is always the same: animals are killed, and then portions are excised with surgical precision, after which the perp leaves the area without leaving any footprints or other signs of his presence.
Any chance this was done by a wolf or other predator?
May have been killed to get some horse meat.
“May have been killed to get some horse meat.”
Hungry human or hungry predator...?
We need more information about the cuts. Were they surgical and bloodless, or were they ragged and the earth all around covered with blood?
Story says they tied knots in the horses mane to cause it pain. Doubt it was wild animals.
From my take on the story the Horse was for lack of a better word, Tortured before it was killed.
I’m not sure what your point is, but if someone wanted some Horse Meat, they could get it wherever it is served or sold.
Never heard of that breed before and I used to have some Morgans. It is so sad that anyone would be so cruel to any animals. I pray that whoever is responsible is caught-—but if not—they will pay eventually, anyhow. It would be nice to prevent them from hurting any other animals, though, before they meet their maker, which I hope is soon.
What a cruel and senseless act. People suck. I hope they find who did this soon. Says they were out of town. Could be someone who knew they would be.
