He was warned not to go into the wilderness because he was unprepared. The dog saved him from a bear and was rewarded by having his owner kill him. I know he was desperate and starving, but it was still an ultimate act of betrayal and selfishness.

Yeah...an act by a desperate man who could not see the spiritual world and only lived for the physical.

Think you’re a bit wrong on this.

The fact of the matter is that animals are on this earth for our benefit, not to consider their lives as greater than our own.

I’ll go far enough to say He is responsible to God for being grossly negligent and putting himself, and one of God’s creatures in a really bad situation. But the decision he made after already being in a desperate was the right one, that does not make it an easy one.

First of all, if the dog could run off a bear, I’d keep him around.

Second, the dog will keep you warm at night.

Third, the dog can chase down rabbits so you got something to eat.

He was lucking. He survived even after he killed the golden goose.

I am sure the man regrets having to do this and will the rest of his life. Don’t point fingers unless you have been in this man’s shoes. Seems everybody wants to play the blame game, even people that should know better.

Oh, Bravo Sierra! Irrespective of the man having lost his supplies, or not being ready...he did have his dog, and it saved his life...twice.

The dog saved his life from the Bear (probably). Then the dog fulfilled his role again by saving his life from starvation.

I have had dogs all my life. One who was a faithful friend of our entire family (my iwfe, myself, and our five kids) for 17 1/2 years. I owuld hacve risked my life to save that dog in the right circumstances.

But, if it came down to that dog or one of my children, or that dog or my life (where I provide for my wife and kids), the dog would sacrifice its life to keep us alive.

Any talk about this being selfish or a betrayal are rediculous.

Gut wrenching? Yes. Betrayal, no.

If times ever get REALLY bad here in America, a lot of household pets will end up on the dinner table. Civility goes out the window when starvation is a real threat, (survival of the fittest and all that).

When I originally saw this article, I was sad but thought the guy did what he had to do...but then read that he ate his dog after only 3 days? Seemed way too early. Yikes.

I am, of course, reminded of Jack London's immortal "To Build a Fire," in which a fool hiking alone in the Yukon accidentally gets wet, and suddenly finds himself freezing to death. He decides to kill his dog - to warm his frozen hands in the dog's innards.

The dog senses his desparation and skidaddles. The man dies.

Though human life is of course more valuable than animal life, I still find that version more satisfying.

Regards,

Stupid, yes. But he survived despite that, thus this was the right decision.

“He reportedly killed him with a rock”

How does he go into bear country, without a gun?

The owner was an idiot and made a fatal mistake. The dog should have been able to eat him.

Sorry for the dog, sorry the idiot managed to survive the way he did. The dog deser ved better.

Idiot.

Story doesn’t add up, timeline is very odd. This fool didn’t deserve such a loyal companion and protector, either way. He went into wilderness unprepared, apparently no supplies, no means of defense.
