I live in an area where the narrow two-lane blacktop has a wide shoulder and a minimum posted speed of 55, but disappears around curves and hills frequently. I have a large noisy diesel truck with big wide mirrors, and I have lost count how many times I have rounded a blind curve to find both oncoming traffic and yet another bike fool on the SHOULDER STRIPE, smurking over his shoulder at me, refusing to move onto the shoulder.

If they insist on hugging that paint stripe, that required three feet of clearance may have to come from them ducking as I go by.

The road doesn’t belong to you personally. You may feel justified in breaking the law because other people are lawfully using the road who aggravate you, but you aren’t. I ask those FReepers inclined to pray to offer devotions that you don’t end up on the wrong end of a negligent homicide.

Or you could slow down a little until it was safe to pass and then everyone could get home in one piece. Quite often, there’s gravel or glass on the shoulder that makes it unsafe to ride on and trust me, the last thing I want to do is ride the line (or lane) and put myself into traffic and harms way.

Nobody is "missing the point" but you.

Cyclists are not obligated to ride on the shoulder of the road for your benefit. When they do that, they do that as a courtesy, FOR YOU.

Bicycles are vehicles under the vehicle code. READ THE VEHICLE CODE; it will tell you explicitly that the shoulder of the road IS NOT for moving vehicles. If you come around a curve and kill a cyclist, you'll be guilty of vehicular homicide, and your belief that cyclists are required to accommodate your poor driving skills will not keep you out of prison.
