AFTER the LDS tried to assassinate him, robbed, stole and killed several others.
Yes. It must be terrible when the governor of a state issues an order for you to be exterminated ...
Before you beat that drum too loudly, you should consider the following facts:
If the people [of Missouri] come on us to molest us, we will establish our religion by the sword. We will trample down our enemies and make it one gore of blood from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. I will be to this generation a second Mohammed, whose motto in treating for peace was the Quran or the Sword. So shall it eventually be with us Joseph Smith or the Sword October 14, 1838 - History of the Church, Vol. 3, p. 167.
... The Mormons in the attitude of an open and avowed defiance of the laws, and of having made war upon the people of this State. Your orders are, therefore, to hasten your operations with all possible speed. The Mormons must be treated as enemies, and must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary, for the public peace their outrages are beyond all description. - Missouri Executive Order 44, the Extermination Order, issued by Missouri Governor Liburn W. Boggs on October 27, 1838
Wasn't LDS leader Sydney Rigdon the first to use the term "extermination" with reference to "gentiles"?
Actually, the term was first used in the original draft of Doctrine and Covenants, then called the Book of Commandments, in reference to a prophesy calling for divine extermination of gentiles from the holy city of Independence, Missouri. Many people believe that Rigdon wrote that portion of the scripture.
The gentiles went completely over the top by burning the Mormon printing press after learning of their predicted fate. Smith and Rigdon went completely over the top by leading the disastrous Zion Camp expedition organized for the purpose of retaliating against the gentiles for their destruction of the press. Then, following their escape from Ohio (after engaging in a massive bank fraud), Smith and Rigdon embarked on a war with their own believers (see Rigdon's Salt Sermon and Bancroft's First Mormon Civil War), and the gentiles (see the Missouri Mormon Wars of 1838), before eventually fleeing the state (following their jail break).
"I am a true believer in the gospel of Jesus Christ, I do not believe everything that is now being taught and practiced by Brigham Young.
I do not care who hears it. It is my last word - it is so.
I believe he is leading the people astray, downward to destruction.
But I believe in the gospel that was taught in its purity by Joseph Smith, in former days.
I have my reasons for it.
"I studied to make this man's [Brigham Young] will my pleasure for thirty years.
See, now, what I have come to this day!
"I have been sacrificed in a cowardly, dastardly manner." (Lee enunciated this sentence with marked emphasis.)

In before the "...at least Mormons aren't taking off anyone's head!" crowd.
It was only by Divine Provenence that the RLDS bunch escaped with the very skin on their teeth from the murdering hordes that were prowling the Missouri countryside.
Somehow they were sly enough to stay off the radar (anachronism alert!) of the Vicous GENTILES who were out to EXTERMINATE them!
the men folk stick together out there....
I know fantastic Mormons....why does every thread have to descend into an antiMormon rant?
Good pt.
And...the RLDS were actually more at risk with...
See: RLDS Missionaries Beaten and Nearly Murdered by LDS - 1864
Twas the Spring of 1864 -- Seven years after the Mormons had massacred 120 children & their parents -- and the Mormons decided to "salute" RLDS missionaries in the Provo area with a "volley of rocks"
The RLDS missionaries were there on the Sabbath to worship when the Mormon bishop ordered them out of the meetinghouse.
By Wednesday night, an RLDS missionary was beset by an attempted "midnight assassin." The perp's pistol misfired.
And the Mormons still complain about Missouri hospitality issues?
There was an incident where four RLDS missionaries appeared in Utah and signed up more than 400 converts in less than one week. The missionaries were quickly driven from the state and the strays were atoned back into the flock.
Perhaps these two incidents are related?
I know fantastic Muslims....why does every thread have to descend into an ISLAM rant?
Uh.. because folks like you know, apparently, nothing about the HERESY that is MormonISM!
Your tagline.
“Before you beat that drum too loudly, you should consider the following facts:
If the people [of Missouri] come on us to molest us, we will establish our religion by the sword. ....”
Self defense?
“there was no Mormon genocide; the Saints merely migrated to another location (Illinois).”
Leave or be killed. And you call it a migration?
If the people [of Missouri] come on us to molest us, we will establish our religion by the sword ... self defense?
A jihad is self-defense? Committing theft, arson and murder against innocent civilians is self-defense? Really?
There was no Mormon genocide; the Saints merely migrated to another location (Illinois) ... Leave or be killed. And you call it a migration?
Actually, the deal the Saints were offered was leave or face justice for your crimes. The Saints chose to quit Missouri ... barely going just across the Mississippi River to Quincy, Illinois for a few months and then north to Nauvoo, Illinois. At that time, land was abundant and in many cases free for homesteading. The Saints left peacefully and unimpeded, taking all of their possessions except for the consecrated goods they stole from gentiles, which were returned to their original rightful owners. And you call that a genocide? Really?
It has been well established that the LDS Church has a long, sordid history of deception to everyone including their members (something they call lying for the lord). They've been caught doing everything from making thousands of changes to sacred scripture ... to concealing evidence (e.g. Joseph Smith's original peep stone) ... to buying and then hiding items deemed embarrassing (e.g. Mark Hofmann's fabricated documents) ... to denying their official positions on various sacred relics (e.g. the Kinderhook Plates) ... to quietly changing major doctrine without explanation or discussion (e.g. Blacks in the Priesthood, the temple ceremony) ... to flat-out lies (e.g. we never really espoused polygamy, and we're Christians just like you).
I strongly recommend that, with an open mind, you study Mormon history from non-biased sources (e.g. source documents) and evaluate the evidence presented by historians who are generally held in high regard within their profession. I also recommend that while doing this you seek answers to these four questions:
Place it in perspective. Compare the numbers of martyrs ... a few thousand Mormons (at most) to millions of Christians. Also consider how they died ... brandishing weapons in war vs. burned alive, flayed alive, and tortured to death.
Consider the reasons given for Saints' persecution ... little things like bank fraud, theft, arson, murder, and sedition. Compare this to the reasons given for Christian persecution ... big things like their failing to worship pagan gods and their refusal to abandon their faith in their Lord.
Begin with the thousands robbed of their life savings and reduced to poverty in Ohio. Continue with the numbers of gentiles (including Indians) robbed and killed in Missouri, Illinois, and Utah. Be sure to include the various massacres (e.g. Mountain Meadows, Atkins, Bear River), and the soldiers killed defending their country.
Scroll up the page to here and look at the number of Saints that were beaten, castrated, and used up by the Danites (a.k.a. Nauvoo Legion and Mormon Militia) under the doctrine of blood atonement. Don't forget to include the six Mormon civil wars, and the Succession Crisis of 1844-47.
