Leaders of the Republican establishment, alarmed by the emergence of far-right and often unpredictable Tea Party candidates, are pushing their party to rethink how it chooses nominees and advocating changes they say would result in the selection of less extreme contenders.
The push comes as the national Republican Party is grappling with vexing divisions over its identity and image, and mainstream leaders complain that more ideologically-driven conservatives are damaging the party with tactics like the government shutdown.
The debate intensified on Wednesday after Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, the deeply conservative Republican candidate for governor of Virginia, lost a close race in which Democrats highlighted his opposition to abortion in almost all circumstances, his views on contraception and comments in which he seemed to liken immigration policy to pest control.
The party leaders pushing for changes want to replace state caucuses and conventions, like the one that nominated Mr. Cuccinelli, with a more open primary system that they believe will draw a broader cross-section of Republicans and produce more moderate candidates.

Yep. That is the problem with most people talking about the GOP - they are completely ignorant of the process. All decisions are voted on by the members, no chairman has the unilateral power to do much of anything.
So, if you want to control the RNC, you need to get people on the county central committees, their leadership, as well as the district and state, and most importantly GET YOUR PEOPLE TO CONVENTION where alot of leadership is picked. This is especially true for Nat’l Committeeman and woman who make up the RNC.
The GOP is a bottom up enterprise - if you ware willing to get off your butt and take the reigns. Those that sit on their ass and complain get what they get.
Hear, hear!
If they have the guts to actually lead, it will be self evident as in Cruz and those who support him, not denigrate him.
If you would like to see something amazing, if you can get Beck’s show from last night, he spoke at length to a pollster that lifted my millennium. This is the reason the long knives are out for Cruz, Lee, Palin and the rest who stand on principle, not Party.

Instead of hanging up on the RNC when they call or sending them back their donation envelope with a big fat FU writtten across it, i propose a clearer message they absolutely could not ignore.
We could organize quite easily especially through social media one week or even a whole month to give folks enough time and at their liesure take a trip to their county registars office and change their party affiliation. Millions of voters off the RNC’s list would send a very powerful message. Of course in many states you’d have to go back and switch to take part in the primaries to keep the RNC from getting “their guy”.
I think this is something quite doable en masse.
Hey a$$holes... you can pick whomever you wish to but we will never vote for progressive candidates and you will NEVER win another national election without us.
Change party affiliation to:
American Tea Party.
Just saying.
(not sure whether that may be used already, just using an example)
We have been playing games with the GOP, long enough.
Bring back American jobs. Bring back American production.
Now.
Thanks, I need to study the Lonegan race.... should have watched it closer. From what you say it looks very similar to Ken’s race.
There you have it.
We aren’t going third-party, the GOP is kicking us out.
They would have had a even smaller minority in the house and senate in 2010 if not for the tea party.
So who still thinks we DON’T need a new party?
Which of the other 53 "third parties" would you prefer? Or would you start a trivial 54th?
Good luck with that.
You have no clue what time it actually is.
Elections. Parties.
They are irrelevant now.
Is the Normalcy Bias so deep and engrained that you people refuse to see and understand what has happened right in front of your face? Or are the people too afraid to look the truth in the eye and recognize that there is no working from within a completely corrupted system to maintain liberty?
Keep deluding yourselves that all we need to do is 'elect' more Conservatives and take over the GOP.
It's what the Ruling Class wants you to believe while they are busy preparing your cage.
Go ahead and try it, GOP. You’ll find that “limiting the clout” of the right wing will result in “limiting the vote” of the right wing.
...often unpredictable Tea Party candidates
Like:
Charlie Crist
Lincoln Chaffe
Arlen Spector
Michael Bloomberg
All supposedly GOP who switched to RATs as soon as they thought it was safe to do so.
Conservatives told the GOP they were being lied to but they continued to pour $$$ into their re-elections.
FINALLY! Someone GETS IT!
It's called Fascism via Marxism, i.e.: MarxoFascism. I refuse to call it crony capitalism, because that gives credence to the idea that capitalism is in of itself, a crony enterprise. I refuse to accommodate the Left's definitions.
It's Fascism - MarxoFascism to be more precise.
And we are ALREADY THERE.
What we are seeing with the Ruling Class push back against the 'counter-revolution' to their 'revolution' - is the consolidation of total power.
Been saying that for years. People don’t like change.
While I suspect some (or a lot) of this is true, given it’s from the NY Slimes, I’m taking at least part of it with a grain of salt, partly because of some of the language they’re using especially wrt to Cooch.
I don’t think we need more open primaries, especially if Dims can vote in them (it’s my understanding that’s the case in at least some states)and pick our candidates. Also, while some states have voter ID laws in place (which the DOJ has suits against) and I think others are trying to implement them, many states do not. IF a state has an open GOP primary, is there anything that is stopping the GOP from having a rule that says you must show your ID to vote? I believe that the parties set rules for their elections/primaries to some extent - just wondering if they could set this type of rule, or if it would be governed by the state’s voting laws.
They need to realize that they are toast if they exclude their base. The base is not going to vote for more McCains and Romneys.
