Working people woke up today with new faith in American politics. Americans who want education, health care, safe jobs, and an economy of shared prosperity voted for working family candidates and policies that rebuild the middle class. Last nights results show that voters rejected the Tea Party extremism that led to the government shutdown and almost caused our country to default. You could see the impact of grassroots politics and the popularity of issues that make a difference in the lives of working people.
In Boston, voters elected a union member for mayor. In Virginia, a working family candidate was elected governor. In New York, voters elected a Democratic mayor for the first time in decades. In New Jersey, voters supported the state legislature and passed a groundbreaking minimum wage increase. And in SeaTac, voters are also on the verge of passing a groundbreaking minimum wage increase.
Elections matter. They can be a road to the future we want and need. At the ballot box, we can help build an economy that works for working people. This year has been important, but the elections in 2014 and 2016 will be more so. We will keep building an independent labor movement that builds power for working people in the workplace and in the political life. Well start at the local level, and well build to the national level. Our role is not to build the power of a political party or a candidate. Its to improve the lives of working families and strengthen our economy as well as our country, and thats exactly what were going to do.
A lot of leftist triumphs, unfortunately. Truly evil people like McAwful and DiBlasio.
The big tax increase in Colo got clobbered though, 66-34.
Average income down, family wealth down, labor force participation down, yep that’s strengthening families alright.
I can just see the banner over Trumka’s desk.
“I am a better liar than Obama”
“Working families” is code for “union members”. When I first started working with a union and I questioned their use of words, saying that non union members work and pay taxes, and they scoffed at me.
What about Christie winning, that has to drive them crazy, also I heard Detroit elected its first white Republican mayor...am I correct?
I hated to see us lose that Alabama congressional seat to the GOPe.
And the saddest part of all this is that they won these elections using the money they siphoned from the government programs. From us.
Still licking your wounds over the ass-kicking Scott Walker gave you Trumka? LOL
Look for the union label...;)

Isn’t this a state that has lost a lot of mining jobs?
Heil Hitler!
Last hurrah from the unions. Their membership is still in freefall. We thankfully nailed their coffin with right to work.
All America got last night was a royal arse reaming!
“In New York, voters elected a Democratic mayor for the first time in decades.”
Technically, that is true.
Since when is McAwful from a "working family" ? ? ?
Mike Duggan is the white democrat elected in Detroit. Being a businessman he may not be as union friendly as many. I know Dave Bing fought with the unions a lot.
That's darn near physically impossible. But a nice image anyway.
Its still not true. They elected a communist.
Good points.
I consider NJFatboy more of a danger than an asset to our cause, however I’m not fanatical about this point.
The Motown deal was interesting, basically the progressive system reached its logical endpoint of total breakdown, and no Democrat of any standing was even willing to take up the cause.
If the R gov and R mayor can produce some turnaround, it would be a blessing for the occupants.
