For Consumers Whose Health Premiums Will Go Up Under New Law, Sticker Shock Leads To Anger

Americans who face higher insurance costs under President Obama’s health-care law are angrily complaining about “sticker shock,” threatening to become a new political force opposing the law even as the White House struggles to convince other consumers that they will benefit from it.

The growing backlash involves people whose plans are being discontinued because the policies don’t meet the law’s more-stringent standards. They’re finding that many alternative policies come with higher premiums and deductibles.

After receiving a letter from her insurer that her plan was being discontinued, Deborah Persico, a 58-year-old lawyer in the District, found a comparable plan on the city’s new health insurance exchange. But her monthly premium, now $297, would be $165 higher, and her maximum out-of-pocket costs would double.

That means she could end up paying at least $5,000 more a year than she does now. “That’s just not fair,” said Persico, who represents indigent criminal defendants. “This is ridiculous.”

If the poor, sick and uninsured are the winners under the Affordable Care Act, the losers appear to include some relatively healthy middle-income small-business owners, consultants, lawyers and other self-employed workers who buy their own insurance. Many make too much to qualify for new federal subsidies provided by the law but not enough to absorb the rising costs without hardship. Some are too old to go without insurance because they have children or have minor health issues, but they are too young for Medicare.

“... but the more you play by the rules, the more you get beat up on.”

That’s right, pal, they must have absolute control of the people who are working and thus write the checks. Everything depends from them.

What are the chances that Persico voted for Obama the last time around? I would wager it is about 100%

Anybody complaining about this law will hear one question from me: "Did you vote for Mitt Romney in 2012? If the answer to that question is "no", they'll get zero sympathy from me!

Amen! When people wake and realize this, it’s game over for those in Versailles on the Potomac.

“My only concern is if people don’t rise up in large enough numbers to stop it.”

Does the GOPe even WANT to stop it? If the upset “large enough numbers” sweep the GOP back into power...will they repeal it?

I don’t think they will...unless it’s Cruz or Paul or some like-minded individual.

Obamacare is a mighty big stick to control in the “stick and carrot” game. Obama has proved that.

Marlys Dietrick, a 60-year-old artist from San Antonio, said she had high hopes that the new law would help many of her friends who are chefs, actors or photographers get insured. But she said they have been turned off by high premiums and deductibles and would rather pay the fine.

“I am one of those Democrats who wanted it to be better than this,” she said.

ROTFFLMFAO!

These people REALLY ARE as stupid as I thought they were!

Wait, Wait, it gets better, I'll bet this DC really believes, in her heart, those DASTARDLY REPUBLICANS somehow caused all this.

In her heart she KNOWS that's true!!

So, what is to keep me from creating an indigent alter ego named Jose Jimenez. Poor Jose is here illegally from Mexico, and has no Social Security number. But he has been working hard to provide for his family for many, many undocumented years.

Now poor Jose wants to access the US healthcare market through the exchanges, but will need a big, honking subsidy to afford that gold-plated plan.

I have no problem speaking heavily accented English when I go to see the doctor.

If you’re all volunteers then why do you need to buy insurance? That doesn’t make any sense.

Prior to care of heeewhoshalenotbeenahmed, these artistic folks could have purchased a plan through the BBB, or purchased an HSA if they were sole proprietorship, LLC etc, or via a guild they were a member of.

So why weren't they pro-active?

Did they not learn in Public School that they might be responsible for themselves and the basics of insurance and investing?

Oh I forgot, a lot of that isn't taught in the school systems, but boy we have time for Banana's in need of Wrappers!

Most of the people getting the shaft are in that category described in this passage . . .

the losers appear to include some relatively healthy middle-income small-business owners, consultants, lawyers and other self-employed workers who buy their own insurance. Many make too much to qualify for new federal subsidies provided by the law but not enough to absorb the rising costs without hardship.

In other words, hard-working taxpayers, Republicans and Independents who didn't vote for Obama.

The regime has been very good at rewarding friends and penalizing enemies.

Since they’re the Chicago political mob, which perfected this type of behaviour, no surprise.
