Black is white, up is down. Anyone else here old enough to remember when being on aid was looked down upon?

It’s not a cut, it is the end of a temporary increase enacted with “Stimulus”

Yes, an $11 a month reduction, who wouldn't riot?

LOL

Normal people... I mean the minority of people who have jobs have seen their income reduced a lot more than that

What utter poppycock! This is a 5% cut, at most.

Methinks there are few too many drama queens. VUt out the smokes, cable Tv or cell phone, you’ll find all kinds of money for the bacon....

Salon trying to spark riots, eh? That would fall under the “levying war against” the USA charge, more so than a charge of “aid and comfort”.

“Anyone else here old enough to remember when being on aid was looked down upon?”

Plenty of pre-1965 films have that message, so the younger set can still get a glimpse of America when it was free! ;)

The people I see in checkout lines using EBT cards (food stamps) are usually fat and their carts are loaded with fatty, ready made, non-nutritious foods. $5 Billion is about 7% cut in food stamps. Might improve health of the overweight people.

It’ll be interesting to see pictures of these suggested riots. I bet half of the “starving masses” are obese.

Arab Spring originally started over food prices.

This sounds mainly like a wish for riots on the part of the liberal elites.

Notice how the article does not use any actual numbers. It’s says stuff like, 16 meals a month are lost. Or a week’s worth of food a month. And 70 million lost meals in NYC.

There are only 8 million people total in NYC.

The math adds up not at all to the extent there is any.

They obviously want to hide actual objective dollar amounts. My guess is the decrease is not a huge deal.

This is pure agitprop.

“16 meals a month for a family of three.” How much is that in weed and Colt.45?

I can’t wait to see the first Obamaville constructed. (search for Hooverville if you don’t recognize the reference)

That ought to be Obama’s shining glory. At last he will have a legacy worthy of his name.

There are probably some out there already but the press haven’t reported them.

If a 5% cut = “a weeks worth of food” these idiots are saying food stamp benefits are 5 times too high...

A knowledge of mathematics provides one a lot of hilarity.

How many people receiving food stamps are making money on the side doing cash only business?

How many people could leech off a family member rather than the US taxpayers?

How many people might be encouraged to get a job and make a salary to pay for their own food?

How many fraudulent accounts would have less money to purchase non-essentials?

The article assumes that all of the money spent on food stamps actually goes for food that is required for sustenance. I'm sure a good portion does, but I'm sure a large portion also goes for waste, fraud and abuse.

It is a government program after all.

“If you look across the world, riots always begin typically the same way: when people cannot afford to eat food,” Margarette Purvis, the president and CEO of the Food Bank for New York City, told Salon Monday.

Translation: Freebies are just the price we must pay to prevent "the poor" from rioting.

Some people might view that as (very thinly veiled) extortion...

This reminds me of other “free” expansions that came with the Stimulus act. Temporary “free” money was offered to the states for their unemployment insurance programs. The catch was a whole new set of federal regulations including making part-time workers eligible for unemployment relief money.

A summary statistical report indicated that an average of 46.6 million people used the program in 2012, up from 26.3 million in 2007, a 77% increase.

Annual costs of program benefits paid to recipients 2005–2012. The amount increased 20% annually from 2007-2012.

Amounts paid to program beneficiaries rose from $28.6 billion in 2005 to $74.6 billion in 2012. From 2007-2012, benefits paid to program recipients increased by approximately 20% annually. In addition to benefits paid, there were other costs of approximately $3.8 billion in 2012.

The program costs have grown much more rapidly than several other safety net programs, due to these eligibility changes. For example, Veteran’s benefits grew 49% above inflation and population growth between 2007 and 2012, while SNAP grew 110%.

The USDA only reports direct fraud and trafficking in benefits, which was officially estimated at $858 million in 2012. The Cato Institute reports that there was another $2.2 billion in erroneous payouts in 2009. The organization claims that figure makes it one of the “most frequently abused non–health care social welfare programs,”
