Cops took no more than 10 seconds to fire six or seven shots into the body of dying teenager Andy Lopez after seeing him with a toy pellet gun. Mr Lopez was spotted by deputies on Tuesday afternoon in Santa Rosa, California, carrying the toy rifle, which they mistakenly thought was a real assault weapon. The time that elapsed between when officers reported the sighting to dispatch and then reported shots fired was only 10 seconds. Hundreds of local residents marched on Wednesday night to remember the popular teen and protest at the senseless shooting. They chanted 'We need justice' as they questioned how the deputies could mistake a pellet gun for an assault rifle.According to a police statement, Lopez was twice instructed to put down his weapon, officers opened fire after he failed to comply - only 10 seconds later. Sixteen seconds later, the cops radioed for medical assistance. Ethan Oliver, who lives across the street, told KTVU.com that the deputies continued to shoot at the boy, even after he had fallen to the ground. Oliver said he went outside after hearing two gun shots and by that time Lopez was already on the ground. Then the cops went at it again and unloaded like six to seven shots, he said. When asked if he meant that the deputy shot Lopez while he was on the ground, Oliver said, Yeah. Exactly what I saw. Authorities haven't responded to his claims, but it raises the possibility that Lopez was still alive when he hit the ground after the first two shots were fired.

“These guns are not toys, they are serious weapons that arms manufactures have spent many years and many millions of development dollars to develop into the most effective weapons possible.
Is that you, Diane Fineswine?”
To be fair only a socialist or govt employee would design a piece of equipment to be ineffective. Still I have to agree he sounds like an anti-gun zealot.
There have been 26 cops killed so far this year, and 1 stabbed. We’re on track for about 120 total killed this year, including car accidents, heart attacks while on duty, etc. At current rates, we’ll probably have under 40 shot nationwide in 2013.

How many civilians and dogs shot so far?
Excellent post..one of the few that actually adds something to the discussion.

Uh, yeah, I am done with the paraphrasing.
I wrote that out for you because you only read the headline before you started talking.
Thanks for actually reading the article and finding some quotes that apparently prove....something.
I don’t recall saying I “adored” the Police, or that you “hated” the Police.
I did give you some good advice that still stands.
If you don’t like the Police, don’t break the law.
>> I wrote that out for you because you only read the headline before you started talking.
Knock it off. Sometimes I read the excerpts.
>> If you dont like the Police, dont break the law.
That’s not something a 13 year old should have to worry about.
The cops got within 30 feet of the kid before making an incredibly bad call.
The dead kid didn’t break any laws.
What part of “if you point a gun at a cop you’re gonna get shot” are you having trouble understanding?
The “open carry should be legal” bit?
What part of “there is a huge difference in threat between someone open carrying a rifle by pointing it in a safe direction and generally keeping their hands off it vs pointing it AT someone during a tense standoff” are you having trouble understanding?
The “oh, but it wasn’t really a gun, it was a toy” bit?
What part of “what the kid had was indistinguishable from an AK47 short of a hands-on inspection” are you having trouble understanding?
The “oh, but he was just a 13 year old kid” bit?
What part of “teenagers who point illegal guns at cops are too likely to kill someone” are you having trouble understanding?
Sometimes the cops are right to shoot someone, even if it was a tragic misunderstanding and you hate cops.
That is a helluva point of view. Let me guess: you are a cop?
By your standards, if a cop points a gun at me and I am not armed, am I justified in arming myself and blowing him away because he threatened me?
Of course, I might have been holding a heat gun working on something, but the cop was threatening me..........."I felt threatened!" seems to work as a defense for them.
They don’t count. According to some unless you are a cop, your life has no value. And civilians and dogs are only good for target practice.
It was 10 seconds from reporting sighting to reporting shooting. Add in the time to get out of the car, give the warning, fire 8 shots, and then report the shooting.
That shaves a number of seconds off.
How long are communities supposed to endure emotional and ill prepared cops? And extremely jumpy too!
oh..so he turns and within 10 seconds doesn’t react fast, so he is shot for that? Cops know about air soft and pellet guns. He wasn’t aiming the rifle, in a shooting stance, right?
If someone yells at me from behind, I’d turn around too.
Should I be shot for that?
that’s right! And he was not in a firing position, right? Good lord.
I think it’s obvious we have I’ll trained and cowardly cops all over the place. If they are going to be so careful as to shot anyone with even the tiniest possibility of being a threat, then they are the last people that should be cops!
BUMP to that!
I totally agree.
Why haven't we seen the dash-cam video?
make that ‘facing the shooting victim’.
