Cops took no more than 10 seconds to fire six or seven shots into the body of dying teenager Andy Lopez after seeing him with a toy pellet gun. Mr Lopez was spotted by deputies on Tuesday afternoon in Santa Rosa, California, carrying the toy rifle, which they mistakenly thought was a real assault weapon. The time that elapsed between when officers reported the sighting to dispatch and then reported shots fired was only 10 seconds. Hundreds of local residents marched on Wednesday night to remember the popular teen and protest at the senseless shooting. They chanted 'We need justice' as they questioned how the deputies could mistake a pellet gun for an assault rifle.According to a police statement, Lopez was twice instructed to put down his weapon, officers opened fire after he failed to comply - only 10 seconds later. Sixteen seconds later, the cops radioed for medical assistance. Ethan Oliver, who lives across the street, told KTVU.com that the deputies continued to shoot at the boy, even after he had fallen to the ground. Oliver said he went outside after hearing two gun shots and by that time Lopez was already on the ground. Then the cops went at it again and unloaded like six to seven shots, he said. When asked if he meant that the deputy shot Lopez while he was on the ground, Oliver said, Yeah. Exactly what I saw. Authorities haven't responded to his claims, but it raises the possibility that Lopez was still alive when he hit the ground after the first two shots were fired.

Two assholes with uniforms, weapons, immunity, and pensions.
Trayvon for the Amnesty crowd/mob/hoarde/gang
Nor should it. Instructing twice and shooting somebody within ten seconds is not going to give anybody enough time to react properly.
Odds are, the kid was startled and unable momentarily to follow any instructions.
He was shot in the back. Did not get a chance to respond.
1) An Airsoft AK looks like the real thing.
2) Police took cover behind an open car door. An AK-47 will penetrate a car doorsometimes both doorsand almost every other part of a car body.
In all fairness, Santa Rosa has some serious gang problems and gang violence.
That pellet gun looks exactly like an AK-47 assault rifle with a magazine loaded
That's 30-40 rounds of 7.62X39 which is pretty deadly at less than 100 yds and even in semi auto 30 aimed shots take about 20 seconds.
So you can kill 30 -40 people in less than 30 seconds.
I'll reserve judgment because if this was in a crowded area where there were a large number of people within close range and the police thought the guy was about let loose on a bunch of unarmed people it could be a mitigating factor.
Remember, California has very strict gun control, including the Bertil -Roos Assault weapon ban
There are very, very few legal AK-47s in California because Bertil-Roos went into effect banning assault rifles in 1988 or so - a time when virtually no AK-47s were in the country.
The pellet gun has what appears to be a full size, high capacity magazine, which is illegal in California, so the cops no doubt figured they were dealing with a guy carrying an illegal assault rifle with an illegal high capacity magazine.
A guy walking down the street with an AK 47 would not raise a fuss in Arizona or Texas, but this is California we are talking about.
All that practice on dogs and old men is really paying off.
Killing kids is easy, now.
It's a pellet gun, which can easily blind someone, and can penetrate a human skull.
The kid is 13, no adult present, carrying the weapon in a public urban area.
That breaks two California laws right there.
His back was turned to the cops, and he was wearing a hoody, so age was difficult to determine.
When ordered to drop the gun - twice - he turned around, still holding the gun, which was now pointed in the direction of the officers.
“There are very, very few legal AK-47s in California”
So then, what are the odds a 13 year old kid would have one?
I would think cops could have extrapolated that possibility.
If the gun had a regulation-orange tip, it got sawed off. I thought from the original crime scene photo that it looked a little odd at the business end.
“There are very, very few legal AK-47s in California because Bertil-Roos went into effect banning assault rifles in 1988 or so - a time when virtually no AK-47s were in the country.”
That is NOT TRUE! I was at the range in Concord, CA today. The fellow at the next bench was shooting his AK47 that he told me was made in Serbia. Bertil-Roos banned specific “assault weapons” by brand/model, but not by type. He was using 10 round mags, which make the weapon legal. Same is true for AR-15’s. BTW, Santa Rosa is not a good place to be, but the cops in this sad instance are simply killers and it will be interesting to see if and how they weasel out of their crime here.
So then, what are the odds a 13 year old kid would have one?
I would think cops could have extrapolated that possibility.
While there are very few legal AK-47s in California, there are ton and tons of illegal one in the state.
The illegal AK -47 is the standard drive by shooting and gang land killing tool for California's booming gang banging community.
You know...I would really like to give the cops benefit of the doubt...but given the rampant misbehavior of so many, and worse yet the knee-jerk unjustified protection from their fellow officers, I just can’t.
This is something cops have done to themselves.
You’re making excuses for assholes. Give it up.
“Those are the questions that need to be asked. It’s ridiculous to blame law enforcement for something like this, but I guess the cop-haters will always come running to exploit every tragedy.”
Tragedy? You can dismiss this as a “tragedy?” These cops are murderers, they belong in jail for a very long time. I guess you must be a LEO, because only a LEO could call blaming this killing in this manner. Shame on you!!
I am so sick of militarized LEOs
They better damn well get right quick when it gets hot
Oh.
Well.
My mistake.
Clearly the kid needed killin’.
