Actually, separating the territory once known as “the United States of America” into distinct republics reflecting the political disposition of the majority within those districts, and following Congressional districts rather than state boundaries, would result in one nearly contiguous “red” electoral country, and a number of much smaller “blue” electoral republics, clustered on the East and West coasts, and part of the so-called “Rust Belt” surrounding the Great Lakes. There may also be some really isolated pockets in and around cities notorious for their ultra-progressive public universities or their history as the state capital, but their very isolation would soon result in their dissolution as a separate republic and reabsorption into the “red” country.

The “blue” republics would soon find, that without the flow of revenue and tribute from the surrounding “red” country, they sink into a real cesspool of despair and anarchy, much like Detroit already has become.

“America” has come to mean some very different things to any number of people, and today, there is little agreement as to just what constitutes “American ideals”.

Markets? Consumers? Railheads? Seaports? Banks? Government checks? Dependence isn't all one way here.
