The Florida sheriff investigating a girl's suicide allegedly prompted by online bullying said he's considering charging the parents of one of the two girls arrested in the case because they're in "total denial."

Obama should be charged. Iam wagering money that some if not all those texts and calls were placed with a Obamafone. ;)
If not the seriousness of the accusation should lead to an arrest.....
This would at least give those "parents" a good reason to pay attention to what their children are up to.
That's gettin' off easy. My 24YO is still living at home. Believe me, it's a point of contention with my wife. I'm the A-hole in the family, but I'm Old School and I was raised that way.
Perhaps it's unfair, but I don't give a hoot. When I was 24, I'd already been a Platoon Leader nearly a year and a half. At 26, I was the S-4 (Supply Officer) of an Air Defense Artillery battalion.
My daughter just turned 26, and has been out of college a few years. In her eyes, I'm a freakin' genius now, as compared to 5-6 years ago.
I didn't mean to make light of the situation. Being a parent is a life sentence, and these parents were blind to what was going on with their daughters.
I've been teaching 6th graders at my parish over 15 years (Old Testament), and we spend a lot of class time dealing with bullying, gossiping, etc. For the life of me, I don't recall any student of mine in all those years that possessed those soul-less eyes.
I borrow a phrase from Francisco d'Anconia in his discussions with Hank Rearden: I give my students the words they will need for the time(s) they will need them. IOW, I try to arm them for the battles they will face, as teens, as young Catholics.
Apologies for digressing.
You're on it. Good post.
The girl who had been dating Sedwick's former boyfriend went to friends around the school and tried to have them turn on Sedwick,
Sedwick is the girl who killed herself, a 12 year old.
My question: why is a 12 year old dating, anyway? Sounds like the whole lot of them were/are screwed up.
Yes. It's certainly a grey area. That being said, criminal charges may not be appropriate, but certainly shaming should be. Problem is, many today would view their behavior as normal, or shameless.
I think Grady Judd has already acknowledged the chances that these two girls will get any jail time are slim-to-none.
He’s pissed-off because one of the girls continued on online about how she didn’t care that the dead girl killed herself and that the girls and their families have just taken a flippant attitude over the whole situation.
He’s holding their feet to the fire.
What section of the FL penal code does being in denial cover?
The parents of the bullies could be charged with child neglect if they did nothing to stop their child’s bullying.
None I would think, but I'm not a lawyer
"Were *her* parents so indifferent to her that they permitted her to be abused?" Which is the flip side to the Sheriff's argument.
I remember that on USENET, the original Internet, that there was a forum specifically called "alt.flame", for people to hideously insult and demean each other. Nobody in their right mind went there to find "acceptance" or "friendship". Just to attack and be attacked. It was very popular to its subscribers.
And if a-holes could fly, this place would be an airport.
; )
Just spoke with a friend who went to Maui, had a drink in a bar with some friends, and all were thrown out because one girl they were speaking with, slurred her speech. The county enforces a law that customers in a bar may not be on the premises if they are intoxicated. If an LEO entered the establishment, they could arrest both the customer and cite the restaurant for allowing an intoxicated person in their bar.
Well what’s the point of going to a bar then?
The girls who did the “bullying” are nothing but trash as are their parents. However, the twit who committed suicide did not have to read, look at or listen to the bullying comments. Charging any one with a crime in this sad incident is insane. If some one is to blame, it is the parent(s) of the suicide for not developing a sense of self reliance and a companionship with God.
“Accessory to a crime” works. Covering up for a confessed techy stalker, harrasser, and perpetrator of manslaughter should be thrown in.
Technological crimes among the very young, resulting in death by suicide of other adolescents is not much longer going to get a pass. It happened when vehicular homicide replaced the horse and buggy, and technology is coming right along as a tool for slander and terrorism causing death.
sherrif grady was once asked why a man ( who executed and deputy and his dog) was shot 76 times.
His answer?? “we ran out of bullets”
“I think Grady Judd has already acknowledged the chances that these two girls will get any jail time are slim-to-none....”

He’s likely right. But I am glad that these two evil creatures have their names and pictures out on the internet now. Now, in the future, with a simple web search folks who have to deal with either of them will be able to become aware of what a potential sociopath they are dealing with. That could save some innocent soul’s life or at least spare them of potential adverse consequences.
And, by the way, shame on the folks in this thread who have been “blaming the victim”.
The “two evil creatures” referred to are 12 and 14 years old.
We can't keep evil, sickening, vicious idiots off this privately owned and monitored website, much less controll the vast number of worldwide losers who inhabit the rest of the web, ranging from child rape porn sites, terrorist groups and suicide enabling sites!
No it doesn't because the were NOT accessories to anything, and for that matter, I don't consider "being mean" to someone on line a crime either. A crime would be pushing the girl off a cliff yelling "jump jump" to a wackjob on a ledge isn't a crime.
You people who are all for using the mindless power and minions of the state to punish behavior you find offensive should seriously consider the implications of what you're suggesting.
For example, if I were to call you a useful idiot who empowers tyranny would you go kill yourself? Would you even consider it? Of course not. So unless there's something seriously wrong in your psyche mean words do you no harm, and it they do, it's YOUR problem , not the problem of those who said them. Save criminal prosecution for criminal acts, and lets NOT give the state yet another handle on screwing the serfs.
