DeFUNIAK SPRINGS —A retired Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam sent a “distress call” to the community Thursday morning.
Edward Armbruster had his son help him turn a large American flag upside down outside his business complex on U.S. Highway 90.
By noon he’d already gotten a strong response.
“They’re saying, ‘Right on,’ ” the 81-year-old DeFuniak Springs man said. “I can tell already it’s going to be (a) hot (issue).”
Armbruster was angered after learning that the government impasse had delayed death benefits to spouses of military personnel killed in action.
The Fisher House Foundation has stepped up to cover the lapse for the time being. The Pentagon has said it will reimburse the foundation when the shutdown is over.
Armbruster, whose flagpole was dedicated to all veterans in 1981, couldn’t take it any more.

I feel like I live in a parallel universe. All around me, I see disgust with Obama and our leadership in DC. It’s everywhere in fact I’ve never seen anything like this. People say that GWB had it rough? I don’t remember EVER a time when ordinary citizens were sacrificing their time to protest and call for his impeachment in small towns all over the country!
LOL! I called my Congressman this past week, I was outraged over the denial of the Death Benefits. I left the message saying it was time for Impeachment. The aide who answered the phone said that was the most common comment! How could this much disgust throughout the country not move the needle? It seems that DC is not only it’s own country but it’s own planet! Over the years we have allowed them to build a wall and isolate themselves from reality. I have ZERO trust in our election process. ZERO!
