A Staunch Republican Tries Obamacare ... And Discovers That It's Actually Pretty Awesome
http://www.businessinsider.com ^ | october 3, 2013 | Henry Blodget

One mystery of the government shutdown is why Republicans are so apoplectic about the Affordable Care Act, a piece of legislation that aims to make health insurance more affordable for millions of Americans.

One theory is that the Republican leadership is scared that Obamacare actually won't be as bad as they have been saying it will be — that, in fact, Americans (including Republican constituents) will quite like it.

If Americans like Obamacare, the theory goes, this will be a big blow to the Republicans' big sales pitch over the past 30 years, which is that more government is always bad. (This despite the popularity of Medicare, Social Security, and other programs that even many Republicans support.) And this, in turn, the theory goes, will be a big blow to the Republican Party.

Well, it seems at least one Republican is pleasantly surprised by the reality of Obamacare.

Sy Mukherjee of ThinkProgress caught up with Butch Matthews, a 61-year-old former small business owner from Little Rock, Arkansas. Matthews, a diehard Republican, was skeptical of Obamacare. But the new law has already allowed him to buy insurance that is both much better, and much cheaper, than the astronomically expensive pre-Obamacare plan he was clinging to from Blue Cross Blue Shield.

A friend who runs a small, independent insurance brokerage found that getting similar, though not as good, coverage through ObamaCare will have a 338% price increase for him and his employees.

Remember the union goon complaining about (supposed) "unintended consequences?" Besides impacting the union members themselves, how many people who are currently making auto payments will have that formerly disposable income eaten up by ObamaCare. I can't wait to see what happens to the auto industry once it fully kicks in...

He doesn’t work, but “he has assets saved up”. So — Obamacare gives him FREE medical insurance, paid by you and I.

“Matthews knew that, at his income level, the law would help him pay for insurance. But even he might not have expected just how good of a deal he could get: his new coverage will cost him absolutely nothing in monthly premiums after factoring in federal subsidies, and has a deductible of $750.”

MORE:

He owns his home free and clear, also his car, has assets saved up — yet, because he doesn’t have wage income, we are paying for his health insurance — how long will the country be able to keep this up?

Until they will just keep 100% of our income and the government “will take care” of all our needs, as they see it fit.

Question: why would a guy from ThinkProgress look for a Republican to interview when Democrats would be much easier to find to interview for him? Moreover how did he just happen to come across this Republican business owner who is sooo happy with his plan?

0 stop insulting our intelligence by using your proprietary social change organizations to place plants in the media to fool the idiots. They’re starting to catch on to your tactics. Any day now one of the members of your staged gun crimes crew is going to come forward and expose your plans to disarm the public by creating horrific shootings for maximum knee-jerk effect...

‘Business Insider’ is a Democrat propaganda organ designed to look as if it is on a par with real business publications like Forbes, Investors Business Daily, and the Wall Street Journal, etc. This “Henry Blodget” is a rat operative. Either Blodget genuinely stumbled upon an anecdotal needle in a haystack, or his whole story is a fraud. I’m betting on the latter.

I love how they always tout social security and Medicare as being popular.
If it is so popular then why is it mandatory?
These reporters are really a bunch of delusional hacks who think they are exucated. The truth is that they have been indoctrinated by Marxist universities and now they don’t know their ass from their elbows.
Just laugh at them.

So a “staunch Republican” gets a freebie courtesy of the “staunch Republicans” who are actually paying taxes and now he is a convert. When I checked for my wife and I... we don't qualify for a subsidy, our premiums are going to double our deductibles are going way up and our benefits are going way down. For everyone other than those who will be getting another government handout it is a very bad deal.

How can the media actually report this crap????

Supposedly, Mr. “Typical” reports that as he has no income Zer0care is cheaper than his past coverage!

What?? Mr. Typical with no income, would have been enrolled in Medicaid, so, which government teat has he decided to move to: The Medicaid teat, or Zer0’s teat??

Still a scum-sucker!

No kidding. There is nothing about him until all of the retweeting and blogging and Daily Kos type posting.

When it won’t pass the giggle test I tend to believe it ain’t true.

The Affordable Scare Act doesn’t make healthcare affordable for millions of Americans—it just rams it down everybody’s throat, so that when everyone is signed up you will have to wait six months for an appointment to see a specialist. Stupid Democrats have forced an increase in demand for services but neglected to ramp up the supply process to meet the demand. Of course they neglected it—it’s an impossible task! The result is going to be an automatic shortage of healthcare providers, leading to rationing of services. Like maybe this was not the intent all along?

Most interesting is that he gave NOTHING except for his 2012 contributions which largely went to Romney.

Raunchy Rockefeller Republican maybe... if it’s even real.

Anyhow he’s keyhole visioned. If he looked at the whole picture it spells disaster. Nice price for... whoops they did a bait and switch and it’s NOTHING like the old insurance plans he knew! It’s a 3rd world bastardization! Complete with banana republic promises that are never kept!

This is horse$hit. NO insurance company offers a FREE plan, with a minimal deductible. And one question that has to be asked is: "Who is your doctor?".

A second question would have to be just what kind of "business" do you have that generates enough income to have a house and cars completely paid off, yet makes "so little" that he qualifies for such a plan?

Exactly! And how long before your voter’s registration and donation history to political candidates is examined before the decision is made to give you chemo for your breast cancer or not?

“But the new law has already allowed him to buy insurance that is both much better, and much cheaper, than the astronomically expensive pre-Obamacare plan he was clinging to from Blue Cross Blue Shield.”

Clever use of language. We are not told how much his new insurance plan cost but only how much he is paying. The author offers no proof that the plan cost less. That is the great lie about Obamacare it deliberately confuses the price of insurance with the insured’s cost.

In this case the Staunch Republican won big time, the insurance company won big time, and the democrats won big time. the only loser was those of us who are paying for it.
