After days of equivocation, Republican gubernatorial nominee Ken Cuccinelli on Thursday called on Congress to reopen the federal government, then fight over whether to starve the new health care law of funding.

“Strangling government to do this is not an appropriate course to go,” said Cuccinelli, the state’s attorney general.
Previously, he had said he opposed the government shutdown, but had refused to specify whether he supported efforts led by congressional Republicans to make passage of a temporary federal funding authorization bill contingent on stripping the health care law of the funding necessary to implement it. That subjected him to days of attacks from Democratic opponent Terry McAuliffe and unflattering headlines.
“Holding one part of government hostage to another part, I don’t think is a proper way to govern,” said Cuccinelli....

He even described the conservative course as a "hostage" situation, the term being used by the Democrats!
His plan is for the Republicans to give up their only source of leverage, and then hold a 42nd vote to strangle Obamacare -- which will do exactly as much good as all its predecessors.

It looks like I will have more free time on election day. Republicans without the courage of their convictions, or, without convictions at all, do far more harm than good. I will also let his campaign know why I will not vote for him, and why I will be encouraging others to do the same.
I am very disappointed in him, but the wheat is being separated from the chaff, and he is apparently chaff.
Congress has already passed the entire budget for the normal (and expensive and wasteful and ultra vires) functions of the federal govt, from A to Z.’

So, if the speaker wants the govt to operate.. he needs to speak with Obama and Reid, as they are the people who are standing in the way.
Those Republicans who choose the cave-in position like 5 Republican congressman from my state of PA do so at their own risk in primaries next year.
Cuccinelli is thinking of all the govermment employees in Tidewater and Northern VA who may be inconvenienced by this situation.
Poor Cuccinelli is in trouble already with the third party candidate (Sarvis) who I would vote for perhaps (if I voted in VA) to send him a message this is no time for Republicans to cut and run.
The train is heading for a cliff and will go over unless the spending, taxes and debt are all stopped dead cold.
Regarding Cuccinelli's doubtful plan to defund Obamcare after funding the federal government, I found the following idea to defund the IRS to kill Obamacare very interesting.

Not yet elected and Cucinelli has already lost his spine. Sad!
My take: Cuccinelli has just deftly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, as McAuliffe in the past ten days has gone on the record as supporting both strict gun control and suppression of the coal industry — two stances that would surely tip many towards Cuccinelli.
However, Cuccinelli, not to be outdone in the political miscalculation department has managed to alienate the entire Tea Party movement in his state.
Oh, people may vote for him, a la Romney, but the fire in their belly has just been extinguished.
Full disclosure: I live in Texas and will not be voting in the race. However, I had been hoping for a Cuccinelli win. Now, I am afraid I do not care so much.

What an idiotic move - in trying to gain a few independent votes he squanders the votes and good will of his base... not to mention his political future.

He can’t really do anything about this and if it makes the govt workers in NoVA feel better about him, so be it...not a big deal, in my mind.
I have to agree. I still plan on supporting Ken Cuccinellie. He has an otherwise great conservative record. Republicans in VA has a lot of government employees in their jurisdictions and are hearing from them. As a non-essential government employee I am contacting my representatives to let them know I support the partial shutdown.

So, he’ll cater to a few by dissing the many? No spine. A stupid move when conservatives are cheering on those who speak for them and are unashamed to stand firm on principles. Even some of the Democrats are cheering for our side.

What did you expect from an R or D in the State (VA) that benefits from BIG Government the most! When are conservatives going to realize what libertarians already have? Both parties ARE for BIG Government...it just depends on what pet interest they represent! You really want to change the system? Solution: 1) Unholy alliance between Tea Party, Libertarians, and Occupy WS (yes “some” of them that have been dissolution with the elite Left). 2) March(Es) on the Capital and Fed Reserve. 3) Demand an ALTERNATIVE to the US Dollar backed by real gold/silver! Support ANY candidate/ politician (ANY Party) that pledges to do so. Let the BIG GOVT people (R&D) and every schmuck dependent on Govt to keep playing with “their” Monopoly funny money. READ the Constitution: Congress shall have the power to coin and print the currency- Not a “Private Banking Cartel”!! Think of these two years; 1913 & 1971. Learn history and figure out What three things happened in those years.
Yes I know all that but it’s a thousand miles away and we have to get past the horizon we see in front of us.
First, kill Obamacare and remove government from running healthcare and its insurance. Police or regulate as necessary but define necessary to be limited to investigations and prosecutions of fraud, never policy and standards which are best left to physician societies and associations. Concierge and Retainer Fee Medicine should be promoted heavily.
Second, pass a series of legislative acts that lead to enactment of the FairTax which Cruz backs. Repeal the 16th Amendment along with repeal or modification of the 17th.
Third, take Mark Levin’s Liberty Amendments as a road map for reform and give it serious very serious attention.

I hate that Cuccinelli did this. That said, the guy has a conservative record otherwise. I don’t know what made him lose his spine here, because he’s had no problem keeping hold of it before. But the alternative is incompetent, moronic,totally corrupt Terry McAuliffe, who will destroy the Virginia economy and try to take our guns.
If by “Libertarian” you mean Gary Sarvis, you can forget it. He has promised to push sodomite marriage on my state, and he is pro-abortion.
