The media and the DC establishment are abuzz with reports that Senate Republicans recently lashed out at Texas Sen. Ted Cruz over the government shutdown. New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte confronted Cruz with copies of ads run by an outside conservative group against her over her vote to allow Sen. Harry Reid to gut the ObamaCare defunding provisions of the House-passed Continuing Resolution. She demanded that Cruz explain his "strategy" over the defunding fight.
It would be more interesting to hear Sen. Ayotte's and other Republican Senators' strategy for reversing the government leviathan that is engulfing us. In 1996, the last time the government was forced to shutdown, the total national debt was just over $4 trillion. Today, it is approaching $17 trillion. In the 6 years that Republican controlled both chambers of Congress and the White House at the dawn of this century, federal spending growth was double that under the Clinton Administration.
What is the mainstream Republican strategy to deal with that?
I was never a big fan of the ObamaCare defunding tactic backed by Sens. Cruz and Lee. It at least had the benefit of being an actual tactic, though, as opposed to what I've seen from most Senate Republicans. "Statesmen" like Sens. McCain and Graham want to build up a surveillance state, while others like Sen. Corker want to assist the federal government to greater regulate the financial sector. Sen. Rubio wants to up-end the rule of law and help Democrats enroll more voters, doing next to nothing to stem the tide of illegal immigrants.
For all its shortcomings, at least the position of Sens. Cruz and Lee was in defense of individual liberty. Does it really matter if there was an "endgame" to defend liberty?

They are scared to death because they don't know what's going to happen. And they can't position themselves ahead of time to confront it.
But if you stand on principle, you're prepared for whatever may come, or don't care because you stood on principle and let the chips fall.
Those that do not stand on principle, like Kelly Ayotte, are being smoked out, called out, made to account for their actions and they don't like it!
They’re being by Sen Cruz to do what they were elected to do for once, and it’s killing them. They hate being forced to actually abide by all the rhetoric they spew during their campaigns about “looking out for you” and protecting our freedom and representing our interests.
I have a framed poster of a hiker with backpack crossing an iced over rope foot bridge. It says:
Courage of Integrity
The highest courage is to dare to be yourself in the face of adversity. Choosing right over wrong, ethics over convenience, and truth over popularity...these are the choices that measure your life. Travel the path of integrity without looking back, for there is never a wrong time to do the right thing.
Live Free or Die?
Cruz should tell her surrender isn’t a strategy either. It’s collaberation.
Were I any kind of conspiracy theorist, the wavering from support of conservative principle could be explained by acknowledging that somebody, or several somebodies, high in the Current Regime now squatting in the White Hut, has access to some very damaging and incriminating information that would reflect negatively on the “enemies” kept on the list. And that this information came from resources connected with the surveillance programs now in place that have been condemned and castigated at many points throughout the world, but seem to still be in operation.
Or maybe I just watch too much of “Person of Interest”, “Scandal” and “Revenge”. These particular fictional dramas seem to have an underlying appeal for a lot of people who have become predisposed to investing a great deal of belief that the possibilities presented are very close to actuality.
Your post makes me think of John Roberts.
To all you wobbly Pubbies out there looking for my support...
No spine, no vote!!
A rare moment of mental clarity from John Boehner: “This isn’t a game!”
Maybe the ditz ought to pay more attention to the people she "represents".
I watched her speech on the Senate floor this morning. She was not happy. She blamed both sides and basically said the far-right did not succeed in shutting down Obamacare and that it is up and running, so where do we go from here? She wants the gov. open....period! I will admit her speech gave me pause about our strategy....but my fellow Freepers always get me back on track!!
Kelly Ayotte...
Member of the Gang of 14 Traitors who voted for Amnesty with Chuck Schumer and Marco Rubio
Member of the Pro-Socialism Block of the GOP for voting to NOT Defund ObamaCommieCare
What’s her claim to the Republican name anyway?
Seems to vote straight Democrat.
The RINO’s need to explain how capitulating and pre-emptive surrender helps the Republican Party.
Well those Senate Republicans who lashed out at Rep. Cruz should enjoy their last days in Washington, if the voters do their duty!
They're there because of your help.
Step in and straighten this out, please.
Senators with the Ayotte mentality bankrupted our country, fiscally and morally.
Senators with the Cruz mentality are trying to save what is left worth saving.
The same sorts of people who believe you need an “exit strategy” before you go to war.
Give'em Hell Ted!
