Park Shutdown Protest in Accomack County (CHINCOTEAGUE, Va.)
WBOC 16 (tv) ^ | Updated: Oct 04, 2013 7:44 AM EDT | LeAnne Matlach

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va.- The federal government has shut down the Assateague National Seashore and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. But that is not stopping residents from trying to get inside.

"if they send me a summons, I'll send it to the White House," Anna Stubbs said.

She and dozens of other protestors are rallying for the parks to reopen, so the Chincoteague economy can get back on track.

"I have a motel and I had 10 cancellations last night, we have the biggest festival we have this year, the oyster festival and they are starting to cancel for that," Stubbs said.

Patricia Bierman said the shutdown is an unnecessary show of power by the government.

"It's all political and it don't belong for the people of the country to be held back by the government," she said.

The closed gates at the parks are not just bad for the people who live in the area, it has also been a surprise for the people who arrive on vacation.

"We're going leave early because we can do more at home than here," Jeanette Lewis said.

Lewis and her husband Chuck have been coming to Chincoteague for years but say the shut down is ruining their fun.

"It's the first warm day," Chuck Lewis said. "Only humans would close a beach like that, you know what I mean. We're not going to tear the place down. There's enough supervision that I think we can enjoy the beach."

Officials from the Office of Fish and Wildlife tell WBOC the people who entered the parks illegally will be held accountable for their actions.

Is this happening anywhere else? If so where?

Obama hates oysters.

There’s an Apple Festival this weekend in Erwin, Tennessee. (btw, there was an elephant hung there in the early 1900’s)

Erwin DOES border on the Cherokee National Forest. Will be looking for any reports.

"he people who entered the parks illegally will be held accountable for their actions."

It'd be fun if millions broke into our public parks to safely enjoy the places and then put a video up on YouTube.

We need more civil disobedience to the Petulant Dicktater in Chief.

There should be no Federal Parks or Federal roads. They all lie within a State.

If Obama and the Dems really wanted to get people on their side, they would be bending over backward to keep these places OPEN. Instead they are scrambling around seeing how many forests and seashores they can “shut down.”

On Wednesday, a friend at work went for a bike ride along the Alviso (CA) Bike Trail. It's a beautiful flat trail on the dikes at the south end of San Francisco Bay. There's a County Park at the entrance to the park. For the first time EVER, a federale was there and a barricade was up. He went into the trail and the federale barked at him "You're Trespassing. Leave." over his bullhorn. Federales have never been seen at this location before and, to our knowledge, don't have any jurisdiction there. But there he was.

I hope that this will illustrate to people just how much the federal government has intruded into our lives.

Like these people can’t believe that their access to a beach on an ocean is actually a “federal benefit” taken away by the whim of a bureaucrat.

Other people were shocked that Skyline drive was closed — it is just a highway, like all the other highways maintained by the feds, so why is it closed? Because it has gates. I have no doubt the Obama administration would shut down ALL the interstates if they thought they could get away with it.

Like they did with the parking spaces on the sides of the road at scenic overlooks that are NEVER staffed by anybody. How many millions of dollars is this president wasting trying to inconvenience the American people?

Unfortunately, they have real gates at some of these places, not easy to get around to break through. I wish we had an uprising though to take back these places.

I’m sure it is. Many of our national parks have main roads running through them and can’t effectively be closed.

Saw this last night on local ABC channel...
And true to form, they made sure you could barely see the “Impeach Obama” sign held at the protest and sanitized all comments that blamed Obozo....our local alphabet channels and local newspapers are all lib dim propaganda mouth pieces....shame.

Don't the states do the actual work on those roads and pay for it with Federal gas tax collected in the several states, then sent to Washington, then disbursed back to the states? I thought that is how it "works".

Perhaps some intrepid reporter could work on a story about how many acres of the USA are controlled by the Feds—as opposed to the individual states.

Here in Nevada, over 87% of the actual land is controlled by the Feds.

It is faaar too high a number & there has to be a serious rollback of the land grabs that the Fed have done in the past 50 years.

So, they can band together to keep AMERICANS out of PARKS within the U.S., yet no one can slow down the flow of illegals over the border? A lot of swear words are bubbling around in my head right now.

This is where we need some constitutional sheriffs to come in & say ‘go home’ to the federales. They could open up the parks & let people enjoy them.

Our daughter has a photography class assignment due next week - fortunately we did Assateague 2 weeks ago and only pplan on Chincoteague tomorrow.

This is hurting our friends who live and work on Chincoteague, particularly those who rely on tips.

Good idea!

I would like to know how the federales plan to keep the Chincoteague VFD from tending to their ponies on Assateague.
