The political operative who brought former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin onto the national political stage as Sen. John McCain's 2008 vice presidential running mate now says he has deep regret about doing creating the freak show that's been running wild for four years in the Republican Party.
Steve Schmidt was running McCain's presidential race when he helped convince the GOP nominee that bringing in a fresh, conservative face like Palin would be a game changer in a race being dominated by Democrat Barack Obama. The results proved disastrous for McCain.
Palin became a leader of what Schmidt called an asininity wing of the Republican Party, hardcore conservatives looking to purge the party of moderates and anyone willing to compromise with Democrats.
For the last couple of years, weve had this wing of the party running roughshod over the rest of the party, Schmidt said on MSNBC. Tossing out terms like RINO, saying were going to purge, you know, the moderates out of the party.
Weve lost five U.S. Senate seats over the last two election cycles, he said. And fundamentally we need Republicans, whether theyre running for president, whether theyre in the leadership of the Congress, to stand up against a lot of this asininity.

Did Schmidt tell McCainus to say we had nothing to fear from an Obama _residency, or did he come up with that bit of stupidity all by himself?
Steve Schmidt is a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT, GAY LOVING CREEP of a guy.......ANY REPUBLICAN that HIRES HIM MUST BE DEFEATED!!
Sarah Palin’s presence on the 2008 ticket is the only thing that saved John McCain from taking a beating the size of the one administered to George McGovern in 1972.
I’m sure Schmidt wishes he had helped select a vp candidate who was agreeable to the folks at MSLSD and the other lib media outlets. He was excluded from many lib-run parties and soirees, and he wants to get invited to them again.
It’s McCain who was, and still is, the freak show.
Schmidt and McCain are Progressives.
dear Steve....you’re the freak show.....and where is the asshole alert
The Cancer has effected the GOP
To me, this has become very simple. The reaction by the GOP Senators to Ted Cruz tells us what we need to know.
We are losing. And we are on the verge of being crushed. The political class has contrived to reduce, and to eliminate if possible, the essence of elections, which are a tool for the people to exercise their role in a system premised on self-government.
The 2012 election was about vaginas (amazing, isn’t it?). The 2014 election MUST be about “Obamacare” so that the 2016 election can be about state and popular sovereignty.
Will the RNC and the Senate campaign committee run an election about Obamacare? Are they even capable of doing so? Even to ask the question reveals is absurdity.
There are only 45-50 liberty supporters in the House and only 5-7 in the Senate. To call them “real Republicans” is a lie - John Boehner and his vile crew, Mitch McConnell and John McCain, Jeb Bush above all - these ARE the “real” Republicans, this is what “real Republican” MEANS.
I don’t know what to call our supporters in Congress. But f they break with the Republican party NOW, there is time to run the 2014 election, in all 435 congressional districts, on the single issue of “Obamacare”, by a fighting, inspired party that will roll over the dying remnants of statist Republicanism.
The congressional Republicans have spoken decisively. They will not oppose Obamacare, and they will work hard to make the next election about anything but. They have planted their flag.
It’s time for a change.
McCain was disastrous for McCain. The main problem is McCain continues to inflict his disastrous self on the rest of us.
If not for Palin on the ticket you would have been part of the greatest margin of defeat in a presidential election...EVER. Not because of Obama, because the number of people who did not vote would have been in the tens of millions.Stick that up your RINO sphincter Steve....
I viewed her selection as a genuine move to reaffirm support of Constitutional, conservative, corruption fighting, rule of law government, as intended by the founders.
Boy was I ignorant.
Of course, now I know that the GOP-E intended to use and discard Sarah Palin exactly as they has done with their conservative base since the day Ronald Reagan left office.
I have also learned that it is impossible to defend a worthy construction from it's critic group's intent to change that construction's fundamental nature, when the defenders have traitors and saboteurs in their group. Those traitors completely co opt the defenders efforts, and turn them to assist the attackers, leaving the worthy construction no defenders whatsoever.
This principle is illustrated in the scale, spectrum and vindictiveness of the attacks on Sarah Palin.
Before any defense of any worthy construction can even begin, the traitors in the ranks of the defenders must be identified and removed. Sarah Palin remains stalwart, and a few have joined her in the service of identification of these traitors.
The ONLY effective response to these traitors is their total and merciless destruction, and the total destruction of the Republican party if they (expectedly)choose to drag it down with themselves.
It's on Juan, take the GOP-E with you to Hell.
Disasterous?! No ... she’s the only reason he got any votes at all.
I don’t have to know him to know Schmidt leaves a slime trail wherever he goes.
He still doesn't get it. The reason for the Tea Party came into being is because the GOPe won't stand up against democraps.
Progressives are Communists.
Don’t sugarcoat the truth - call ‘em out by their real label.
As a CCW card carrying proud member of the Asininity Wing of America, steve schmidt can ESAD.
Sarah is the only reason mcpain got any votes and if they had allowed her to go all out, mcpain may have won.
In other words, the operative is sorry Palin could not be controlled as well as the sell-outs he is used to.
No neck tie; he must be circumcised.
