A UN report says that there has been a surprisingly large drop in worldwide deaths due to AIDS, and a significant drop in the number of new cases.
BBC:
Death rates fell from 2.3 million during its peak in 2005 to 1.6 million last year, says UNAIDS. The number of new HIV infections fell by a third since 2001 to 2.3 million.
Among children, the drop was even steeper. In 2001 there were more than half a million new infections. By 2012 the figure had halved to just over a quarter of a million. The authors put the fall in deaths and infection rates in children down to better access to antiretroviral drugs which help suppress the virus.
Without treatment, people with HIV can go on to develop Aids which makes simple infections deadly. By the end of 2012 almost 10m people in low and middle income countries, including South Africa, Uganda and India, were accessing antiretroviral therapy, according to the report.
The improved access is being attributed to drugs being more affordable and available in communities, as well as more people coming forward for help.
Bev Collins, Health Policy Advisor at Doctors without Borders said: "Huge leaps forward have been made to make sure that millions of people - especially in the developing world - can access lifesaving HIV treatment at an affordable price.
Amazingly good news. But there's something missing from this news story. The experts are crediting "better access to antiretroviral drugs which help suppress the virus." But where did the drugs come from? Who bought them? Who paid for them.
You did, America. And a large part of the credit should go to one man; George W. Bush

bttt
Same as always “It’s Bushes fault”
And that is why the credit will never be given. After all, how could any Republican, even one as lefty as Bush, ever do anything good for anyone?
RE: Same as always Its Bushes fault
It’s Bush’s credit.
Hate to advocate for the devil, but when pressed about GWB, even my really leftist associates admit he did great things for Africa.

How about your liberal friend giving YOU and ME credit as well, for providing the funds for this?
In addition to fewer deaths, it’s also good news that there are fewer new infections.
Bush’s fault
The UN and “progressive” governments want the AIDS death rate to decline so deaths are categorized as something other than AIDS causeddeaths.
They list the cause of death as pneumonia, pulmonary infection, etc.
Geeez. six bullet holes. Yep! Heart failure!
Maybe a thinning of the herd had something to do with it.
If you believe that then prove it.
Go find some HIV contaminated needle, blood or other bodily fluid and inject it into your bloodstream.
Then refuse antiviral treatment and tell us how great you’re doing.
Not willing? Then STFU, moron.
Very unusual language for FR. I thought this was a forum. The video is my proof. Watch it you like. But watch your language in any case.
The video is not proof of anything, other than that there are some people incapable of understanding science or logic.
And you are correct, this is a discussion forum where people can write their opinions. The opinion I expressed is based on what you have written and what you believe. My colorfully abbreviated suggestion to you was not meant as a prohibition, but a recommendation based on your unwillingness to put any real demonstration of faith in your ‘knowledge’ of the subject.
Frankly I am surprised that you could figure out what any of the letters in the acronym stood for.
You of course are free to do and say what you wish, but in my opinion the trivialization of an epidemic by posting pseudoscientific fantasies is far worse than abbreviating a four letter word.
