I was looking at all these newfangled pieces of equipment here --- some of the things that allowed the efficiencies of this plant originated in laboratories and scientists doing work on the government’s dime," he said. "That's how we always maintain our cutting edge."

So what is behind the greatness of the American economy? Obama carefully gives credit to the private sector, but he argues that government is essential to this process.

Everything from the assembly line to automobile financing came from the mind of one man... Mr. Ford.

And he paid his workers the then, astounding rate of $5 per day, without the government telling him he had to.

OK moron, name one piece of equipment in that factory that was developed by government lackeys! I dare you! I double dog dare you!

“but he argues that government is essential to this process.”

As in picking winners and losers, who so ever is closest to the reigns of power will win.
Mussolini also spoke of ‘Corporatism’ which is exactly what we now have. We’ve quickly gone from a mixed economy (started by FDR) to Nationalism of businesses.
If you argue with ‘Progressives’ they will tell you that Socialism is government ownership of businesses. But as anyone from Hitler/Mussolini to Putin/Obama will tell you, You don’t need to OWN the business to control it’s operations. It’s all in the Regulation.

To the extent that private firms always have their hands out to the government to fund their research (or other things), he is not wrong.

BTW - Does Daimler still own Chrysler?

Nope, Chrysler is now owned by Fiat (58.5%) and the UAW (41.5%). Daimler sold its control of Chrysler to Cerebus in 2007 and the remainder in 2009 just as Chrysler declared bankruptcy. Fiat has said it will buy out the UAW shares, just no date certain.

So what is behind the greatness of the American economy? Obama carefully gives credit to the private sector, but he argues that government is essential to this process.

In and of itself, this argument is absolutely correct. Without government, the private sector as we know it cannot function.

Capitalism is absolutely dependent on a legal system to enforce contracts, provide a reasonably safe environment in which to function, etc.

Unfortunately, the fact that government is necessary for business to function leads idiots to believe anything governments might do will help the economy.

Mussolini also spoke of ‘Corporatism’ which is exactly what we now have. We’ve quickly gone from a mixed economy (started by FDR) to Nationalism of businesses.

Sorry, but when M used that term he did not mean government by business corporation. That's a modern leftist lie.

He meant government by bodies (literal route of word corporation) that engaged the populace in government via occupation. IOW, business corporations, unions, professional associations, farmers' coops, etc.

Splitting the people up by function rather than location. In and of itself not an inherently bad idea.

Sorry. Corporatism is not a government influenced by interest groups but elected on a geographical basis.

It’s a government with representatives specifically elected to represent occupational groups. Instead of Scheumer being elected to represent the people of the state of NY, but being in the pocket of the unions, he would be the Senator for the teachers’ union. Meanwhile, Rand Paul might be the Senator for the US Chamber of Commerce.

Etc. IOW, corporatism isn’t a corrupt geographically represented system, it’s a system chosen by entirely different criteria.

Should point out that corporatism, which as an idea considerably predated Musso, may certainly become corrupt.
