On Fridays Special Report on the Fox News Channel, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer mocked the Republican tactic of using the budget process to defund President Barack Obamas 2010 health care reform law.
Krauthammer called the Houses vote to defund the law Kabuki and warned that it would come back to haunt congressional Republicans.
I think the Boehner speech is what you would expect, Krauthammer said. He didnt want to do it. He had to do it, so he had to defend it, and thats Kabuki. I think its going to go to the Senate and if we end up with a shutdown, its going to be Kamikaze, and the Republicans will end up sushi very thin slices. And everybody knows this. This is sort of a charade. Cruz is going to get a lot of airtime. Hes gotten a huge amount of airtime. There is nowhere to go on this.
He did note the law was very unpopular and was fraught with flaws, but he said the Republicans could stand in the way of defeating it.
The irony is as I have been saying for weeks, Obamacare is so unpopular even the unions are up in arms against it, he said. The AFL-CIO came within a hair of calling for its repeal. Right now they want all kinds of changes, which they are not going to get. Youve got Democrats against it. Its about to kick in and we heard today that they dont even have the software that will enable the system to calculate what the subsidies are after hearing that they dont have the software to ascertain what you say is your income and thus, your subsidy. Its true, so its on an honor system. This is going to be a complete disaster. Were on the threshold of that. As Chuck indicates, the Republicans were on the upswing of the issue and now this? Its insane and its not going to happen.
; )
Right on.
HAHA, I mean Inside Washington
The Capital Gang was more fiery.
yummy! and yes, thank God!
Ex democrat ...
I am old enough to know most of the GOP establishment would have been traditional democrats during Reagan
which is exactly what Krauthammer was btw...
yes Virginia there was a time when there were reasonable democrats who were social conservatives and strong on national defense and not progressives
but that train left the station with Sam Nunn more or less
If they want to end it they will support what needs to be done to do so, including 'shutting down the govenment' (which is a phony term).
We will see what the American People are made of, they stopped the Syrian bombing, and now they may stop Obamacare.
He almost got it right with the "Kabuki" remark - the real kabuki is the "lipstick-on-a-pig" disaster of ObamaCares-not-a-whit-about-the-unwashed. The defunding would be like Mimi using a gallon of Noxzema.
I think everybody knows the only things the GOP fights for anymore are things they know they can't win. They're their own worst enemy, looking at it from the outside.
Looking at it from the inside - this is what they believe will save some of the traitors from being voted out.
All their action on this is simple grandstanding to put up the facade that they represent their constituents. They know they will lose this fake battle they just hope to keep their jobs, that is all they intend with this.
If they had really wanted to defund Obamacare, they would have reached across the aisle and agreed to support other non-obamacare additions to the budget so they could have gained more support in the senate. America is for sale to the special interests groups. This could have been an easy win, but the GOP is a bunch lazy video game playing do nothings - for the most part. They'll never shut down the government, so with that in mind, this is the battle that never was.
Exactly. Krauthammer’s been hanging around the DC salons for a little too long.
lol.
after I loged off last nite I was thinking it is a shame we can’t clone cruz ;-)
Dr K was, IIRC, on the campaign staff of Walter “I want higher taxes” Mondull.
Appears he never evolved from his big govt liberalism/socialism
He is not a conservative overall. Maybe on some issues he seems that way, but he really isn’t a conservative. He is very intelligent though, just not a conservative.
More blather out of the beltway pseudo-conservative surrender caucus.
Sushi is good. I like volcano roll. Yum!
Someone please help me. My French is pretty weak. Does “krauthammer” translate as surrender?
“If CK is right and if the government shuts down then a worst case scenario would be the dems taking the house and holding the senate in 2014.”
And if the gop wing of the uniparty rolls over when it really IS important, then what’s the use of having them in the first place?
Might as well get on another enemies list.

+1.
Because it's a legitimate concern.
After the Senate rejects the CR, no one knows what will happen. Some of the possible outcomes are fairly good, some are really bad.
The view that a chaotic and probably collapsing Obamacare in September-October 2014 would be good politics for November 2014 is correct. You should acknowledge the possibility that the chaos that a shutdown will unleash in October 2013, 13 months before the election, will give the Propaganda Ministry too much time to frame the next election.
Obamacare cannot possibly "work". It's not designed to "work". It's designed to fail, to create chaos, and to arouse public clamor for full nationalization. Funding it, and blaming the resultant chaos on the Democrats, is a legitimate strategy.
That's why some conservatives are opposed to the Cruz strategy. They may not be right, but they do have a reasonable concern.
That's true, but only up to a point.
They want a lot of what's in it, and they sure don't want a free market in medical services.
The "law" (not sure it's really a legitimate law, more like an unconstitutional enabling act) is an abortion, a fantasy paste-up wish list of every commie wet dream of the last 50 years.
In that sense, they overreached, and may ultimately fail.
But the PREMISE of the law, which is that "they" are out to screw "you" and that your protector is FedGov is not unpopular and may in fact now command a majority.
They don't want the reality that is the recursive clusterf*ck it's turing out to be.
