‘Ballistics evidence” proved the model of firearm used? really?

I thought ballistics evidence was pretty much limited to the caliber and type of bullet used. Perhaps angle of entry as well.

Oh, it’s even better. This “ballistics evidence” even told them the size of the magazine. Real CSI wizards, these guys.

There is more to be gleaned. The rifling pattern (lands, grooves, twist direction) are also discernible. Enough to identify a manufacturer and model in some cases. The finest scratch pattern matches require a bullet fired from the actual barrel in fairly close temporal proximity to the bullet recovered from the scene under investigation. Caliber, weight and style are also useful inputs.
