But the truth is, I haven't done that, not ever.
Instead, I've fully affirmed what the NT clearly says about Jesus -- Son of God, sent by God to be our Messiah/Christ/Savior.
What the New Testament does not give us is explicit Trinitarian language saying that Jesus is God Himself.
That idea took centuries of theological noodling to arrive at, and even then, many did not agree -- and suffered for it.
In this particular example, your idea that Jesus was God's unique Son is fully consistent with John's gospel and indeed the entire New Testament.
But it contains no hint of a suggestion that Jesus was God Himself.
It’s starting to look more and more like the JW heresy.
On the contrary, Jesus even claimed to forgive sins, for which He was charged with blasphemy (Mk 2:5–7), because He was fully aware only God can forgive sin.
In perhaps the clearest indication of His claims about Himself, when the high priest asked Jesus if He was the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus plainly declared that He was. Then He further asserted that He was also the Son of Man who would coreign on God’s throne and come on the clouds in judgment. The high priest pronounced these claims blasphemy (Mk 14:61–64). Judgment is reserved for God alone.
