(Reuters) - The Republican-run House of Representatives voted to cut spending on food stamps for the poor by $40 billion on Thursday, defying a veto threat from the White House in the name of fiscal reform.
Majority Leader Eric Cantor, the driving force behind the legislation, said "it's wrong for working, middle-class people to pay" for abuse of the program, whose costs have skyrocketed in recent years. Democrats pointed to nonpartisan estimates that the bill would end benefits to 4 million needy people in 2014.

Bless you, and may your efforts soon be handsomely rewarded.
You rent which means you are not tied down by the sale of a home. MOVE. Send resumes out 500 miles plus past where you are living now.
That is a very important aspect in my household whether it pertains to income/employment, purchasing, and etc. There are 50 states that are commpeting for my business or can fulfill the most important needs...and I will use them all if the situation requires it!
Personally I think we should go back to food distribution centers. No EBT cards that can be sold for cash or used for tattoos, casinos, etc. Provide, bread, butter, milk, eggs, flour, sugar, some meat, vegetables.
I was at lunch wit coworker today and she is major lib. She brought up how Republicans are against public programs for poor people, they hate poor people, they reduced funding for head start, etc”. I tried stating that no, they are against the abuse of those programs. She just said, oh well, there is abuse everywhere and you are always going to have that, etc....
Got quite heated— but she and two other coworkers make the same statement over and over again, Republicans are against poor people.
Hey, I don't care if you plug in old sparky. People who support charity at the point of a gun don't belong here, IMO.
Yep- libs and Dems throw this around, how Republicans don’t care about poor people.
How about stopping all the stupid grant dollars. Do we really need to spend 1.2 million to find out why Lesbians are obese?
How about cutting out 30-40K portraits of Congress folks when you can just take a picture with a digital camera.
How about funding for more jobs to investigate the fraud with IRS refunds, Medicare billing, food stamps, etc.
How about cutting foreign aid to countries that hate us. Just read where we are sending Pakistan 25 million dollars for education in their country. Really??
How cutting out landscaping and interior decorating for our Embassies that run into millions of dollars.
Republicans need to get out and market the abuse of the fraud and explain how they will fix that. Folks don’t mind giving people help when they fall on hard times- but they do mind the in your face fraud that is going on....
Where in the Constitution does it even hint, that I’m supposed to feed other people?
The reason this would be a major pain and unworkable is that you would have major lobbying from manufacturers and even lawsuits defending their products. Yes, some really egregious items in the snack section might get cut off but many others would be defended based on vitamin additives, ability to re-hydrate, etc. And some "luxury" foods are normal foods say if you're a crabber or lobster trapper. These things sound ridiculous but would tie up the reform process for years.
All the summer school lunch programs of which I'm aware require no card, no qualification or any kind other than 18 or younger. These rules are set by the feds. Any EBT cards used at fast food joints in certain states have nothing to do with the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) .
There was an article posted on here last Spring that said in some areas instead of people setting up and feeding the children meals as has been done for years in the summer that as a test they were giving cards to the children that could be used at fast food places. There was quite a discussion about it when it was posted, many of us wondered how that fit with Michelle’s healthy food for children campaign. It may or may not have been part of the SFSP, possibly it was done in areas where that is not available- but it was reported as if it was part of the program.
OK, I didn’t know about that, thanks.
Here’s a start on tackling our dependency problem: no one gets an increase in benefits just because you have more kids or have people move in with you?
I mean, what working person gets a raise every time they expand the size of their household?
