I think Assad understands the region better than liberal policy wonks. The whole democracy/ ‘Arab Spring’ movement has been a disaster. These people cannot self govern without a civil society. Folks with short term memories forget Bashar al-Assad allowed Syria to be used as a staging ground for al Qaeda to infiltrate Iraq and kill U.S. personnel and Iraqis.
