For the last few weeks, House Speaker John Boehner has been trying to find a way to convince his caucus to vote for a bill that keeps the government open after Sept. 30 without picking a fight over Obamacare. But a minority of his caucus has been insisting on defunding Obamacare, egged on by outside conservative groups and a handful of far-right Republican Senators, most importantly Ted Cruz (Texas). This has been pretty annoying for a lot of House Republican members and staff. Jonathan Strong and Andrew Stiles of National Review got an anecdote out of a closed Republican Study Committee meeting yesterday:
Max Pappas, an aide to Texas senator Ted Cruz who was on hand, rose to argue that in the event the House and President Obama were at odds when government funding expired, Republicans could pass a bill to fund the troops and other core priorities. At that point, a woman rose, identifying herself as a staffer to a Texas Republican. Pappas, she said, was “not dealing in reality” and making everyone else’s life difficult. The staffer, whom two GOP sources identified as working for Representative John Culberson of Texas, went on to decry Cruz for holding events in Culberson’s district and telling his constituents that defunding Obamacare would be “easy.”
This is a key aspect of the Cruz-driven defund Obamacare push. With in the Senate, Cruz is essentially irrelevant. Any budget deal that comes out of there will be struck between majority Democrats and a number of more practically-minded Republicans, like Sen. John McCain (Ariz.). [ROFLOL!]

Well, at least that troll was something new. Usually, it’s some lib pushing homosexual “marriage”, gun grabbing, the redistribution of wealth, or other libtard garbage. For the first time, in what seems like forever, we had a RINO troll. (We might as well forget the Paulbot infestations of ‘08 and ‘12. They were merely annoying, like ant bites.)
I think the reason why this is such a rare event is the simple fact that no one actually supports lukewarm, wet cardboard Republicanism outside of the Beltway of Babylon DC. If anything, it means We the Conservatives are kicking the tar out of They the RINO Elitists.
And quite frankly, Jim, We the Conservatives have you to thank. I’ve always considered FRee Republic one of the factors that helped to bring about the modern Tea Party movement. That’s nothing to sneeze at.
He has my vote. No reservations whatsoever. America needs Ted Cruz just like we needed Reagan to end the Carter Error.

Since I use my real name here, I have several times had the experience of going to conservative conferences, had major national-level people see my name tag, and had them say to me, “Hi, I'm so-and-so from Free Republic.”
The first time it happened I was shocked.
Then it happened several more times.
And then I realized several people in my own community are Freepers, in a few cases all the way back to the Class of 1998.
I am convinced that Free Republic has become a major factor in helping conservatives discuss current events and what to do about them — conservatives ranging from the upper levels of Washington to local elected officials on city councils and school boards, as well as the unelected and unpaid but deeply committed volunteers who are the foot soldiers of any political movement.
Free Republic is not perfect, but I can't think of any similar forum out there doing what Free Republic does.
True, there are some others out there. I am a member of several such groups, though I rarely post. Most of those other groups are nowhere close to being as large as this one, and therefore they are much less effective.
It would be very easy for Free Republic to morph into something different. Jim Robinson deserves a lot of credit for standing his ground on some key moral issues that two decades ago were commonly accepted among conservatives, but have now been called into question by the libertarian wing of the Republican Party.
As for people who can't seem to figure out that people who own a website get to set the rules for how it will be used — they need to go back and re-learn what conservatives believe about private property.

Lol, I know the feeling. I like a lot of things that are just too ‘young’ looking anymore. The prettiest things are either for the young juniors or in the XXPlus sizes.

Late 60s is no time to wear ‘young’ stuff.
Failure to enact a CR will not deny grandma her SS check. It will simply throw sand in the gears of gubmint leaches who vote 'Rat in any case and therefore do not matter.
Recall that the major criticism of defunding was that mandatory spending would continue nonetheless. However, it's perfectly possible to write a CR that will defund ZeroCare in its entirety while still acting as a normal CR for everything else. And I dare say, you don't even have to be as smart as Ted Cruz (although I wouldn't want to try it by myself). The House should pass such a CR and leave it up to Zero and Dingy Harry's Senate to respond.
Will Zero shut down the government? Or won't he? And why should I care?
