Americans shouldn't let Vladimir Putin's opinions get under their skin because the Russian president is a one-time KGB officer whose primary interest is nationalism, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday.
"While we have to deal with him as the president of Russia, we don't have to respect his views. We don't have to respect his opinions," said Gingrich, co-host of CNN's "Crossfire."
"And frankly, we should laugh at him when he tries to lecture America about exceptionalism, because he ain't exceptional. He's just one more in a long tradition of dictators and thugs."
Putin rattled some Americans, including high-profile figures in Washington, when he argued in a New York Times op-ed against U.S. military intervention in Syria. In the final paragraph, he took issue with the idea of America being the proverbial shining city on a hill.
"It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation," he wrote. ....
The former House speaker pointed to Putin's history as a former intelligence officer for the KGB, where he worked from 1975-1992.
Gingrich also argued Putin was behind the Russian invasion of Georgia in 2008 and the conflict in Chechnya has killed thousands.
He expressed doubt the opinion piece was even written by Putin, saying it was likely penned by a Washington speechwriters.
"You can go through and read that document and you could find at every single stage find that it's a lie," Gingrich said. "For us to take it seriously is a sign that we have forgotten who Vladimir Putin is."

Empty rhetoric. How do you know what he wants? Links, please. And the phrases I pointed out above are if not propaganda then cheap rhetorical devices, repeated ad nauseam, aka cliches, that have lost their power and won't persuade anyone. Reading comprehension again.
I think these disgusting disgraceful anti-American Putin fans would be happier posting at RussiaFirst.com, or SovietRepublic.com.
“the KGB bootlickers.”
Whose bootlicker are you? Obama’s?
Think of it in terms of envy. In Putin, people are seeing a LEADER. A leader who champions his nation’s interest. Something that has become all but extinct in wimpy, metrosexual, faggoty America. And in the rare occasions we do get some no-nonsense, straight-arrow leaders (Palin, Cruz), who echo America’s past moxie and past greatness, the putrid culture goes all out and targets them for destruction.
Didn’t Putin warn us about the Boston bomber - and we didnt listen?
I am sorry if I don't buy the flag waving.
The Ruling Elite haven't an ounce of American patriotism in them, and Newt is a one-worlder just like the rest of them.
Thank you for the voice of reason on this otherwise Religious thread consisting mostly of phrases of received wisdom.
Mitt was never my choice, but I would take him over Obama.
Exactly.
Putin has been a government employee all his life and he became a billionaire by looting his own country.
You're seriously asking how the CIA is different from the KGB? Try reading a book sometime.
Russia is better off because Fascism is superior to communism as an economic system. It hasn't much to do with Pootie-Poot.
“Didnt Putin warn us about the Boston bomber - and we didnt listen?”
He also warned us about the incoming September 11 attack and we didn’t listen.
That has been going on for some time, and in no way connected to the “bright red line.” And as for that, as long as it keeps the conflict going, I’m all for it.
If that’s true then why did Putin allow Tsarnaev to travel to and from Russia in 2012?
What’s up with that?
We have a mole.
“Empty rhetoric. How do you know what he wants?”
Seriously? I can’t take you guys seriously when you’re even apologizing for his pro-Soviet Union remarks. The quotations are well known. Google them yourself.
Putin is a dictator and a thug. He’s just a better class and smarter than our dictator and thug, darn it.
Global investment portfolios are poised on whether to back deflation and/or inflation. Once your banking parasites decide to jump ship (off the dollar), we can comfortably plan for deflation.
But if the dollar still has a few more laps to go before it's laid to rest, especially with a potential roll up in the ME, then it will be critical to stay long.
However, I don't think your PR push is really doing that much good. What we really need is a something to cause a positive course of action. Know what I mean? As in, something to precipitate another round of Patriot acts to "keep us safe", sort of like NDAA.
How much do you guys get paid by the way? It can't be that much - or do you just play the rube, all the while backing the same horses as those less vocal?
PS As you may have noticed, FR is dying on the vine. The smart set has departed for other harbors; perhaps you can try your (il)logic elsewhere to test market receptiveness. Good luck.
