New rifle mimics machine gun's rapid fire -- and it's legal (here comes the media)

Machine guns are illegal in the U.S. for most people, but one small company has found a way around that. Slide Fire, based in Moran, Texas, plans to sell a semiautomatic rifle that mimics the rapid fire of a machine gun and is also fed bullets from a belt, which provides a huge capacity for ammunition -- potentially thousands of rounds.
Brandon Renner, sales and marketing manager for Slide Fire, says the belt-fed rifle, called the SFS BFR, will be available this fall and sell for $6,000. "It sprays like a fire hose," said Renner. "We recommend no more than 30 rounds on the belt, but one person could make it as big as they want." Can that be legal? The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says yes, since it's still technically a semiautomatic.

Here comes the media looking for stories to scare the masses once again.
SlideFire has been making these accessories for years, yet now, just a day after the Colorado recall, CNN trots this out as a news "story".

Just a more efficient mechanical way to bump-fire. It should be a blast.

You can buy a SlideFire for about $350, much cheaper than the $6000 gun they list.

What are the legal implications of a “limited round” magazine several states have imposed when talking about a “belt” fed weapon?

I'm pretty sure SlideFire manufactures/sells some kind of trigger modification mechanisms which can be used on several different semi-automatic rifles.
Yet, CNN clearly states the company will be selling fully automatic rifles.
Could it be that CNN is incorrect in their assessment; or could they possibly be INTENTIONALLY trying to mislead the public in their story?
Hard to believe, I know. After all, their firearms coverage has always been so accurate, balanced and trustworthy...

What are the legal implications of a limited round magazine several states have imposed when talking about a belt fed weapon? I do believe that in those states with magazine restrictions, belt fed weapons are verboten.

Machine guns are illegal in the U.S. for most peopleAnother blatant lie. While the FedGov heavenly regulates them through the NFA, it is possible to get a fully automatic weapon in the US.

You are correct; this is semiautomatic, no different than someone using their belt loop to achieve the same effect. (the original way to bump fire)

Oh, so they will be selling a rifle.
Makes me wonder about their marketing prowess. Why wouldn’t I just buy their $350 to $400 kit and convert my own $1,000 AR15? or even a $200 SKS?

What are the legal implications of a limited round magazine several states have imposed when talking about a belt fed weapon? As I understand it, the recent Colorado law limiting the transfer of magazines of over 15 rounds also prohibits the transfer of any belt of over 15 rounds.
