As of right now, Bill de Blasio is the man to beat in the race to be the next mayor of New York City. The latest polls put him at 43%, which is enough to avoid a run-off in the Democratic primary, and it is widely believed that whoever wins the Democratic primary will sail into office. For the most part, sitting mayor, Michael Bloomberg, has stayed out of the race, but in an extensive interview with New York Magazine the term-limited Independent ripped de Blasio's campaign as "class-warfare and racist":

Good campaign slogan! Actually, believe it or not, there hasn't been a mayor of NYC elected on the 'Rat line since Dapper Dave Dinkins in 1989. So maybe it should be, "if you want to return to the bad old days of Dinkins, vote Democrat." But then that would considered "racist" in some circles, I'm afraid.
Earth Wind and Fire called, they want their old hairpieces back ;)
So change that to “If you want to return to the days before Rudy, vote Democrat.” Leave the negative references implied.
Please excuse Juan’s absence. Signed, Epstein’s mother.
Funny thread. New York City is voting to see which complete scumbag gets to push the flush handle.
Yes, I vaguely seem to remember that note. LOL!!!
Those offended would still call it "racist" because it's about the only way they can oppose it. And if they did go ballistic opposing that slogan, you could expect a full-fledged local MSM feeding frenzy to aid their cause, so much so that it would end up being a national cause celebre for the 'Rats.
This might be something they’d try, but it wouldn’t work. First of all, everything in the current cycle is overshadowed by Anthony’s Weiner flipping off reporters, and Spitzer the sociopath losing his revival bid, Syria and the senior swimmer lady, Prince Edward’s reality show, and other stupid stuff. The LSM can’t just conjure up a feeding frenzy at will; all the stars and planets must align for a feeding frenzy to happen, and the sharks are stuffed on too much junk food to get up an appetite at present. Second, the perpetually offended would have scant material to go on. They do want to go back to the days before Rudy, and they will vote Democratic. I think they’ll predict that the slogan will backfire, and snigger oh-so-smugly, ‘til the election results start coming in. There’s not enough there to translate into sufficient angry chimp noises (there, now that’s a phrase that they’d get upset about, if DiBlasio had used it). There’s also the fear of sounding like a jack-ass, which is what happens when you try to make a feeding frenzy out of a molehill and the sharks aren’t biting it.
As to your last point, since when does the MSM have fear of sounding like jackasses when cheerleading for a lefty candidate and/or knocking a relatively conservative one? They have absolutely no shame.
With regard to the Weiner and Spitzer foibles, those would be ancient history by the time the general election rolls around in November (from their vantage point), as might be some or all of the other stuff you mentioned.
So if the GOP candidate Lhota issues any statement warning of an impending disaster should NYC return to the bad old pre-Giuliani days (i.e., the Dinkins regime), there's no reason that the MSM couldn't play the race card against him, especially now when then Dem candidate will be either a black man or a white guy married to a black wife with two black kids who try to look and act black.
But there are very good reasons. When Weiner, Spitzer, etc., are ancient history, so will the slogan be. You can’t have a feeding frenzy over leftovers. The MSM often does make a jackass of itself, which is why they have an aversion to it, and choose their targets with care, and if it doesn’t take off right away, they drop it. Don’t fool yourself that they are idiots. They are when it comes to dictating public policy, understanding complex situations such as the Middle East, the environment, and the criminal justice system. But that’s not their area of expertise. They are experts and even geniuses of a sort when it comes to manipulating the public. My proof, the fact that they do it so often, and make so much money at it, despite being idiots on the very subjects concerning which they are manipulating the public. So the statement as I formulate it will not lead to a feeding frenzy. It doesn’t mention Dinkins by name, and could just as well refer to Ed Koch, Abe Beam or John Lindsay. So there goes the race card. By the time they make the case for the race card, people will no longer remember what they’re talking about, and they’ll be on to Prince Edward potty training his little heir apparent too soon, or a zoo animal giving birth, or some other MSM-type thing.
As for your statement that the MSM "are experts and even geniuses of a sort when it comes to manipulating the public," I can only buy that to a certain extent. Apparently, the American people are getting turned off increasingly by the MSM, as demonstrated by the plummeting network and lefty cable TV news ratings and waning circulations of the likes of the New York Slimes and the WaPo. You can get a sense of schadenfreude when you look at the Slimes' stock price chart.
Who knew Bloomberg can stand on a principle we can all admire?
Yeh. They’ve been caught at it so often, they don’t dare go out on a limb too far anymore. Which is why, as you say, they’d have to be desperate to do that. They may be geniuses at mass deception, but mass deception has its laws of physics, too, just like any other field, and geniuses are powerless against those laws of physics. They can find loopholes in them, which is what geniuses do that amazes people so, but they can’t outright defy them.
I’ll reserve my schadenfreude for when the New York Slimes goes into receivership, when I’ll celebrate by wiping my ass on the masthead of the edition where they finally confirm the reports of their insolvency.
