I think it can happen if the metal is exposed to intense radiation and that energy causes some atoms of the metal to become temporary isotopes.......
I remember back in the late 1970's, there was a scare over gold jewelry made from radioactive gold. IIRC, there was one man who got cancer from a radioactive gold ring back then. I know in Pat Frank's 1959 book, "Alas Babylon," there was a chapter where some looters got a huge haul of gold jewelry, all radioactive. Needless to say, they got radiation sickness from it.
