A House Democrat who joined striking fast-food workers in Illinois yesterday said the American economy needs doubled wages for the restaurant workers.
This gets to the heart of our economic problem in this country which is income inequality. And yes, those arches are made of gold for people like CEO Donald Thompson who makes over $13.7 million in his pay package last year. But I met fast food workers today at McDonalds who have been working there for a decade and still making $8.50 an hour, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said on MSNBC.
You cannot live on that kind of wage, and they end up turning to the government for support. So we end up subsidizing Donald Thompson and the profits that McDonalds, she added.
Schakowsky said the pay of private entities to workers who choose to take a job there is Congress business because this is an entire industry that is paying poverty wages in this country.
Thousands and tens of thousands, maybe millions of people who simply cant make it on those kinds of wages, and I think that forming a union, getting $15 an hour, which makes a modest income of about $31,000 a year, if you get to work full time, is something that is a proper demand, she continued.
And actually these workers are acting are going to the employers, are going to these companies. Im standing with them because I think we need it for our economy. If they got paid more, were going to see millions of jobs created because there are going to be consumers in the marketplace.
As far as what Congress can do to compel a higher wage, Schakowsky suggested starting at the executive branch.
The president could with an executive order do something about the low-wage workers, 2 million of them, that are contract workers for the federal government. That would be a good start, she said.
That would be, I think, a very good signal that we dont think those poverty wages that are paid to millions and millions of workers across the country are good for our economy and certainly not good for those families.
A little thing dreamed up by Benito Mussolini. As you may recognize FDR copied allot of it for his New Deal.
Close, This was 1919 in Italy.
The 60’s must have been very, very good to her ...
They do not work for me, if they want to be paid see the boss. If this causes them to not want to do their jobs, then that reflects on their character doesn’t it?
The 1860’s?
good advice, but it is beyond their intellect to run a lemonade stand..oh wait, the police would shut it down for not having a permit....
Basic economics has never been the Democrats strong suit.
McDonald workers are bitching about not making a “living” wage but have no skills adequate enough to earn them more.
When my wife and I started out 54 years ago, if we didn’t make enough money, we took a second job. To earn a higher salary I went to night school (5 years before get my degree) and I worked 5 days a week on my regular job plus Friday night, Saturday and Sunday on a part time job.
I am sick and tired of hearing how bad those fools have it when they have the same opportunity anyone else has. McDonald workers can go to Burger King, Taco John’s or wherever for a second job. You want more money then work harder and learn to speak english, that might open a few more doors as well. Stop the bitching.

Anyone who has never ran a business for profit should not be allowed to comment on how a business should be operated. If you read Schakowsky’s biography, you will understand why she know diddly squat about economics and running a business.
That is just stupid. That is only $31,000 per year. Also, since Obamacare has created a situation where employers are cutting hours to below 30, we need to establish minimum wage to at least $32/hour. At $50,000 per year fast food and low wagge earners will be much better off.
I love well-done sarcasm!

She's unfit for office. Ten years?!? No wonder shoe store salesman Al Bundy lived in Chicago.
....Except to maintain those automated machines.
She embaresses me as one who is of part Polish heritage.
Stuff like this will in time make the local restraunts popular again.
If we double quadruple it, we can produce hundreds of millions of new jobs! There will be negative unemployment!
” If they got paid more, were going to see millions of jobs created because there are going to be consumers in the marketplace.”
As long as people will pay double the price for fast food, as these places can’t pull the extra payroll out of thin air. Besides, the First Lady has it in for fast food places as is.
There's apparently multiple levels of ignorance at work here.
