John Kerry, the American secretary of state, has said that the United States now has evidence of sarin gas use in Syria and said "the case gets stronger by the day" for a military attack.
President Bashar al-Assad, he said, "has now joined the list of Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein" in deploying chemical weapons against his population.
A day after President Barack Obama stepped back from his threat to launch an attack, Mr Kerry said in a series of interviews on the Sunday news shows that the administration had learnt of the sarin use within the past 24 hours through samples of hair and blood. The samples were provided to Washington by activists in Damascus, independently of the UN investigation.
Mr Kerry also said he was confident that Congress will give Mr Obama its backing for an attack against Syria, but he also said the president has authority to act on his own if Congress doesn't give its approval. While Mr Kerry stopped short of saying Mr Obama was committed to such a course even if politicians refuse to authorise force, he did tell ABC's This Week that "we are not going to lose this vote."
Congress is scheduled to return from a summer break on Sept. 9.

Can we get some background on these "activists"? I'd like to know who is supporting these people and what are they "activists" for.

1000 dittos. Yeah sarin may have been used, but WHO used it. Wanna know and need to know that before obama makes his pathetic message move.
There is another possibility, though, that I haven't seen discussed on FR (I know, I lay my self open to a good ol'flaming, but, please, just send the links if I'm wrong. :-) ) but has been discussed elsewhere on the net.

It's a long piece, especially if one wants to follow all the leads, so here is the abstracted version:
Fuel-air ammunition contains chemicals (eg ethylene oxide, propylene oxide) that if unexploded causes symptoms much like nerve gas agents. However, FA-munition or thermobaric bombs are not classified as CW-weapons and are not prohibited.
The hypocrisy would of course be astounding (but it is already), but a "dud" fuel-air bomb would not be considered a war crime. Would it be considered a "red line"?

Am am confused, aren’t the folks in charge now the same folks that said the 155mm shells full of Sarin, that they found in Iraq weren’t really WMD because they were old?
And aren’t the the same folks that declared a pressure cooked full of class C firecracker components IS a WMD?
