As head of state at the Vatican, not to mention the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, protocol requires visitors to bow to him when they meet him at the Holy See.
But Francis, who has made the forgetting of formalities a trademark of his papacy, bowed when he met a smiling Rania as she visited the Vatican with her husband King Abdullah II on Thursday.
"Up until the 19th century visitors would kiss the pope's shoes, and the tradition is still that all visitors, women included, bow to him, but Francis behaves as he did before he became pope and is not interested in protocol," a senior Vatican official told The Daily Telegraph.
It is not the first time the Pope has eschewed formality when receiving visitors.
When Cristina Kirchner, Argentina's president, met him in March, a day before his formal inauguration, he gave her a kiss after she presented him with a gourd for mate, the traditional Argentine tea.
"Never in my life has a Pope kissed me!", Mrs Kirchner said afterwards.
When she met the pope in July, Brazilian's first female president, Dilma Rousseff took the initiative, kissing Francis on both cheeks.
Francis' bow was just the latest in a series of signs the pope has no time for ceremony.
On Wednesday he showed up in central Rome for a religious ceremony in an unmarked Ford, without the papal flag or number plate, driven by a Vatican gendarme.
He then entered the church carrying his folded mitre tucked under one arm. The incident recalled his carrying a personal briefcase up the steps to the plane on which he flew to Brazil in July.

So the Popes always bow to Royalty?
Did any American president before Obama?
Hey, you believe Popes stand around like statues waiting to have people bow to them all day if you wish. No harm IMO.
Meanwhile here is JP2 kissing and bowing to the Koran.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeCYetHqudk
Christ washed the feet of his betrayer and before bowing his head and dying, He prayed to His Father to forgive his executioners for they did not understand what they were doing.
Why do you lie about me and claim such a silly thing.
You sounded calm when you first made your claim, then when I asked for some evidence so that we could challenge this article, your calm fell apart and you started raving and spewing nonsense.
It is clear that you are just throwing out BS out of some weird desperation, who knows why this article so upsets you that it would cause you to embarrass yourself like this.
See #45 that someone else calmly left for all of us.
I can understand using sugar to open up a dialogue, but JP2 IMO went too far. So lets make up for that by making him a saint, right?
Maybe he was getting a closer look at her finger nails. They may have had a message on them like “ISLAM SUCKS”. I don’t know.
Maybe he was looking at the wedding ring and said he knew a good jeweler that could get her a deal in the next diamond if she wished? Again, we do not know.
Now you want to change the topic, the article is not about him kissing a book, it is about him bowing to an Islamic Queen.
You claimed that bowing to Muslim Queens is normal, I asked you for your evidence so that we can challenge this article that says it isn’t, that it is a break with tradition, and so far all you have done is go kind of nuts, posting about everything except for what you and I and the article are talking about.
He BOWED to and kissed the Koran.
Related IMO.
If you read the article, the claim is that this is a break with tradition, not the first time that he has been polite to a woman.
By the way, the “woman” is a Muslim Queen, he was also polite to Nancy Pelosi, but I don’t think that he bowed to her.
Evidently your claims were nonsense since you can’t post any evidence of Popes bowing to royalty.
People are posting on here about the Pope bowing to others as well. Not a big deal really, this isn’t a pissing contest that I know of is it?
Anyway enjoy the tread as others expand the bowing and such.
You started out matter of factly disputing the article, then when questioned on it you crumbled into all kinds of varying strategies to express your anger at the article, from lying and insulting to weird rants.
Since you don’t have anything real or truthful to challenge the article with, why not just let the article stand until you do?
Another weird, blatant lie, care to link to those posts?
Just wondering?
Take a chill pill, discuss and enjoy my friend. Wait till you get before God for judgment then bring the intensity. This is Saturday night and we are privileged to be here at FR posting this night. Saver the moment.
Looking at your posts on this thread, you were just making things up, and working hard with no honesty or integrity, to insultingly blow off posts to you challenging your claims.
BS is unappealing and dishonest, Saturday night or not.
