Jimmy Clanton is 78 and still kicking. His songs “Just a Dream,” “A Letter to an Angel,” “Ship on a Stormy Sea,” and “Venus in Blue Jeans,” each sold over one million copies. He started his disc jockey career at WHEX in Columbia, Pennsylvania in 1972 and eventually worked his way back home to Baton Rouge. He’s been inducted into The Museum of the Gulf Coast Hall of Fame and The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

The last interview I saw with Jimmy Clanton he said that after the ‘long-haired Englishmen’ arrived his career tanked. He was big when I was in high school in New Orleans.

The
Piano Sonata in G, Op. 14/2, has its own unique peculiarity: the finale is labeled a scherzo but is actually a rondo. Its another short piece.
The first movement is in 2/4 time and is marked simply allegro. It sounds a lot like Schumann who wasnt even born yet. There is no transition to the second subject, which begins immediately in D Major. Its beautiful, amazingly simple, and Beethovens idea of soft rock.
At 3:31, he switches to G minor and then B-flat Major for his development. But things get testy with triplets in the right hands against duplets in the left hand. He brings back the opening theme, but now in E-flat. Its a long development as he works his way to the recap.
At 5:13, he recapitulates the first subject in G and maneuvers so that the second subject also appears in G. He ends it quietly.
Beethoven wrote a lot of sets of theme-and-variations, but up until now he didnt write one for a sonata. This slow movement is a theme-and-variations movement in 2/2 time, C Major, and is marked andante, a walking pace. It opens with 8th notes, and each one is followed by an 8th rest, which creates a staccato effect. He plays wonderful games with quiet notes alternating with abruptly loud (sforzando) notes.
At 8:54, Variation #1 staggers the theme between hands.
At 10:13, Variation #2 puts the theme in the right hand on the beat with the left hand providing on-and-off-the-beat accompaniment. Chopin learned a lot from this variation.
At 11:30, there is a minor key transition to Variation #3, which splits the theme between the left and right hands. He wraps it up with the theme stated simply.
The scherzo-finale is a rondo in G Major, is in the unusual time signature of 3/8, and is marked allegro assai, very fast. At the beginning he makes it difficult to figure out what time signature hes in by playing around with where he starts a grupetto. Its a rhythmic game.
At 13;35, he starts a second theme in C Major.
At 14:23, he returns to the opening theme.
His next theme is a left-over-right crossover followed by right-over-left crossover, after which he brings back the opening theme, ending it quietly with a little growl in the bass. Its a cute little kitty-cat, not a raging lion.
