Warplanes and military transporters have begun arriving at Britain's Akrotiri airbase on Cyprus, less than 100 miles from the Syrian coast, in a sign of increasing preparations for a military strike against the Assad regime in Syria.
Two commercial pilots who regularly fly from Larnaca on Monday told the Guardian that they had seen C-130 transport planes from their cockpit windows as well as small formations of fighter jets on their radar screens, which they believe had flown from Europe.
Residents near the British airfield, a sovereign base since 1960, also say activity there has been much higher than normal over the past 48 hours.
If an order to attack targets in Syria is given, Cyprus is likely to be a hub of the air campaign.

Turkey is on our side against Assad so Russia might have a hard time moving its forces into the Mediterranean.
You mean like Turkey was on “our side” during the Iraq War?
Turkey would join coalition against Syria, says foreign minister - August 26, 2013 - "We always prioritize acting together with the international community, with United Nations decisions. If such a decision doesn't emerge from the U.N. Security Council, other alternatives ... would come onto the agenda...."Turkish PM: We could never take sides with Assad - August 26, 2013 - "More than 100,000 people have been killed in Syria. Where is the international community? Where is the U.N. Security Council? No sound from them. When we talked, then they say what is to you? Why do you talk? I speak on behalf of my people You told us to go forward to alleviate the sufferings of the Syrian people, and we are going forward."
By the way, when I say "our side," I mean the USA.
Average American: “What’s a Jarret?”
True dat. It is an affront to common sense and decency that the big O will get us involved in this conflict at all. He is too late for any proper initiative and what he offers will just complicate matters further. And, if the idiots in this administration think that this move will deflect attention away from his scandals, they just might get more than they can handle.
I wasn’t aware that commercial airliners had active radars.
Thanks mojito.

I don’t doubt our ability to go in unmolested and blow things up. But undetected? .. especially when we are right now putting forces in the Mediterranean? Look at a map. We have to send airplanes, UAVs and cruise missiles across Lebanon and Syrian coastline where they can be detected. As soon as that happens, the Syrians scramble their assets and relocate them somewhere in the desert. We do some damage and distract them for a few days. Big deal.
They cannot risk dispertion of any chemical stockpiles, so any TLAM warshot will be used for precision defensive supression needs...Lots of “cluster bomb(lets)” to wipe out AAA, and other known SAM sites...
I do! Go Putin! Tell 0dumb0shit to eff____ himself and to stay the hell out of Syria. 0dumb0 is so stupid & arrogant however and is bound & determined to support Al Queda & the Muslim Brotherhood. I wish it would be possible for just a hand-hand duel between Putin & 0dumb0, just to see Putin kick the sh_t out of 0dumb0! I would pay a $1,000 for a ticket to see a match like that!
Next New Moon is September 5th...Early in the morning...
