ACT test results: Only 5% of black students 'fully ready' for college

WASHINGTON — Just a quarter of this year's high school graduates who took the ACT tests have the reading, math, English and science skills they need to succeed in college or a career, according to data the testing company released Wednesday.

The numbers are even worse for black high school graduates: Only 5 percent are fully ready for life after high school.

The results, part of ACT's annual report, indicate thousands of students graduate from high schools without the knowledge necessary for the next steps in life. The data also show a downturn in overall student scores, although company officials attribute the slide to updated standards and more students taking the exams - including those with no intention of attending two- or four-year colleges.

It should come as no surprise that only 5 percent of black students are ready for college. With a 70 percent illegitimacy rate, single parent homes the norm, and no parental guidance, education is continually decried in the black community as “trying to be like whitey”. A great number of blacks shun education, many numbers drop out of school to maembrace embrace hip hop or ganstra culture. These losers become feral animals that prey on society. Those that stay in school are ill equipped to function if they can complete high school (usually through social promotion). Example: Trayvon Martin's girlfriend Rachel Jeantel.

Bill Cosby has been trying to tell blacks to stop playing the victimhood and race cards. He urges them to effect change in their own hearts and minds; he urges them to speak good English and to embrace learning. For this stance, he has been excoriated by the professional race baiters. Sadly, it appears significant numbers of blacks are beyond redemption at this point.

I went to a public high school in the early 1950’s and then on to U.C.L.A.-a good university then. At U.C.L.A. we competed with kids that attended Groton and we did just as well. However, I went to what was then an above average school district.

Products of the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Boggles the mind when one compares this to the accomplishments of someone like Washington Carver during times of segregation.

Our education system is clearly failing. It takes a certain amount of discipline for kids to learn. That seems to be lacking today.

“Root causes”.. easy- African Kings, for 150 years, sold their lame, lazy, crazy, criminal, etc. population to the traders. Think of Castro’s 100,000 “Marielito’s” that were dumped on America in 1980

“They graduate with little employment skills...”

They get jobs at ACORN-type organizations or in positions that make productive enterprise more difficult.

Yes the vaulted USSR Education Bureaucracy is still “Searching for Superman” the elusive genius group of minority students. Why not it only cost the white debbels ~$10k per chillin.

“I don’t have any problem making general, factual statements about race.”......” I wouldn’t treat a young black male poorly based on that unless he gave me indications he was violent.”

The problem comes with taking a factual, objective assessment from a statistical group, and then applying it rigidly to an individual.

It’d be far less than 5% if the ACT were in cursive.

A consequence I lay squarely at the foot of the problem....gov’t AND parents (or ‘parents’).

REMOVE the tax from the community, starve the NEA and unions and have parents pay for the education of their brood.

Then and ONLY then will you see improvement.

Yup, I was actually thinking about posting that comment, but wanted to keep my comments brief. Anyhow, a long time ago I posted the scheme of "educating" students that have no business in college into community groups and even government. Colleges are more than happy to accommodate this scheme for $$... that is why we have African American Studies, Women Studies, LBGT Studies, etc

You posted: I’m surprised it is as high as 25%. Most young people I encounter don’t have enough sense to get in out of the rain. But, they do know a lot about their smartphones.

What is required to be qualified to enter college is hardly taxing any more. A large number of students need remediation when they get to a university, and they had no reason to know they did. They get credit toward their degrees for taking the remediation classes, so there is not enough time left to impose rigorous requirements to complete their majors.

It is not a problem with the public school system (which has lots of problems). The "college for all" mania has to stop sometime, might as well be now. Anyone with an IQ <110-115 is probably wasting precious time and money they don't have on college. What percentage of various groups are in that range is unimportant. What IS important is that to achieve the imaginary result of near-universal HS graduation the complete debasement of education is required. Somebody posted here yesterday that 30% of HS seniors are unready for college, and posted it as a criticism of public schools. Yes, it's a criticism all right - but not the one he thought. Any test that says 70% of HS seniors ARE prepared to do baccalaureate work is a worthless test. That number is not, CANNOT be higher that 25%. It's probably closer to 10%. The forest of lies about education in America is very dense. Let's not join the party. What percentage of HS seniors have IQs >115? If THEY are not prepared to do college work at age 18, we have a problem. The 5% African-American figure, in isolation, is meaningless.

“To this day I am still impressed at the quality and high level of education received in public high school by those I knew who graduated in the 1920’s to 1940’s “

Of course you are. In 1941 the white HS graduation rate was 25%. If 75% of whites left school after 8th grade, you would STILL be impressed with the product of high schools today.

Dang. And here I am praying my daughter will get accepted into Baylor with a 28. I’m still pushing her to take the ACT one more time.

That 5% are the ones that are ridiculed by the rest of that culture, for “acting white”. I admire them for the crap they have to withstand from the “hip hop/rap/thug” culture.

Take a look at this 8th grade test from 1912.

1912 Eighth Grade Examination for Bullitt County Schools

I did remedial English language tutoring to first year college students and I can tell you not one of those I tutored could function at this level.

I don't think a single one of them even knew the meaning of the word 'grammer' - or wanted to.

Or as Community Organizers, Obamacare Navigators, or at the University of Chicago Medical Center pushing welfare cases on other hospitals.
