The former pope Benedict has claimed that his resignation in February was prompted by God, who told him to do it during a "mystical experience".
Breaking his silence for the first time since he became the first pope to step down in 600 years, the 86-year-old reportedly said: "God told me to" when asked what had pushed him to retire to a secluded residence in the Vatican gardens.

God worls in mysterious ways...and in many forms ;)
My default position on people saying, “God told me to do it.” is one of eye rolls, but in the case of the Pope, I will make an exception.
Shrooms man, that stuff happens.
Mystical experience. Dementia. What’s in a name?
Let’s just accept on face value, that he had a notion that it was time to step down. He’s 85, I think? He’s an old man and realized it, and decided to step aside.
Yep, the Pope gets the exception on this one. It is called speaking “ex cathedra” - i.e infallible.
I thought it was all the frivolous lawsuits.
You would think I wouldn’t be shocked anymore at the anti-Catholic comments on FR... but I am truly amazed at the mocking of the Spiritual.
We’ll find out one day, one way or another. I’ll haveta remember to ask Him..................
Dittos. Especially BXVI.
When evil is daily tolerated on a forum (the way anti-Catholicism is here), it overtakes it and chokes out the good. FR is a shadow of its former self.
God still DOES speak to us.
You got that right. I often have seen in the last couple of months threads that have been posted by Catholics on articles by Catholics having been attacked by Bible based Christians. It has greatly sadden me, at a time when there are Christians who are suffering and dying in places such as the Middle East.
Too many choose to ignore HIM. How can anyone love GOD and ignore HIM and HIS word?
If FR has declined, I’m pretty sure it has absolutely nothing to do with your imagined “anti-Catholicism”.
None so blind...
Could be dementia, but God could’ve REALLY WANTED Bergoglio to be the new Pope!! (Pope Francis).
I agree. There are many people who are going to have a BIG surprise someday
