If $15/Hour Minimum Wage Is Good, Why Not $200?

Labor: Fast-food workers are planning a one-day strike on Aug. 29 to demand an increase in wages from the $7.25 minimum to $15 an hour. But if $15 an hour is so great, why not ask for $100 or $200 an hour instead?

Indeed. Evaluate on English fluency, job mastery, and customer relations/feedback.

You want the pay ? Deliver the performance.

Of course, it will never happen. . .

Focus on one central point, do not stray, latch on like a pit bull and refuse to go further until they understand: ‘that is not your money’.

When employer and employee agree on wage, the money the employer pays- is not your money. In fact the money the employee recieves- is not your money.

For you to put your designs on other people’s money is despicable.

If you think that people ‘deserve’ $15/hr regardless of the value they are trading, then HIRE them yourself and pay them yourself with YOUR money.

Any hope of a productive discussion is impossible with one who does not ‘get’ that they have no right to spend other people’s money.

Most often the conversion never gets past this point. And that is fine. Any conversation that would follow with this being misunderstood is a complete waste of time.

... I really get a kick out of people that tout the fact that McDonald's employees in Australia make a living wage of $15AU.

It should be noted, however, that those same people always conveniently leave out the fact that .... our 99 cent hamburger or cheeseburger here in the US ...... is priced between $2.00 to $3.00 in the land of Oz. That is an almost 300% increase in the price of the cheapest burger compared to here in evil America.

I'll see your $22/hour, and raise it to $30, just to be fair.

Welfare recipients do not have to pay taxes on their benefits, whereas a worker is subject to FICA, Medicare, and income taxes. It's an educated estimate that the pre-tax amount of $30 would result in an after-tax hourly rate of $22/hour (+/-).

How about $22?

Ironically that is what the Left is claiming it would be had it been adjusted to keep pace with inflation in real dollar terms since 1968.

Based on the inaccuracies in the order that I got today at McDonald’s, it’s clear that some of the employees aren’t even worth minimum wage.

Let’s make it $526.32 and hour! That would make everyone millionares! Who cares if it makes a value meal cost $363.

Have you ever worked for minimum wage?

In May of 1974 min wage was $2.00/hr adjusted for inflation that would be $11.66/hr in 2012 dollars.

“For many financially struggling families, such price increases would mean the weekly trip to McDonald’s would no longer be affordable.”

An un-discussed consequence covers the other side of this: with the price of a family meal out at McDonald’s going from $20 to about double that, many will decide that a nice sit-down dinner isn’t much more and just go there instead. I’d rather spend $35-40 at Bahama Breeze for real food and real service than $30+ at a jacked-up-minimum-wage McD’s for grade-D meat on a nutrition-free bun “served” on a tray.

Those who can’t afford it vs. those who see much better options for a few bucks more. Minimum wage narrows the customer base.

Many people haven’t worked for minimum wage precisely because the work, while needed, wasn’t worth that much and so nobody was hired for it.

I have worked for minimum wage. It Sucked. But at least it could keep up with inflation.

Raising minimum wage to $12.00 / hr would not double expenses. Labor is only 25% of the total coast of fast food.

The cost of the other 75% would rise as well. Final price may not double, but still go up enough I’ll eat somewhere better, pay a little more for much better results.

Raise min. wage to $15 and you have to bump everyone above them also. Plus, the employer won’t settle for teens and unskilled workers if they have to pay $15 per hr. so most of the min. wage workers will lose their jobs. Hello $20 burgers. More if you want fries with that.

Two hundred it good - but lots of folks would like to live in a mansion... and not some tacky McMansion. How about a million dollars and hour? Now that’s cooking...
